qtdragon - probing issues

I'm thinking we could put this in 2.9 now for broader testing. I think the routines don't do crazy things and have a lot more 'sanity' tests.

Then we could tweak things and work on docs

How do you feel about that?

Yeh, push it now. I think the testing we've done isolated the problems.
Either way I should be able to test in a couple of hours.

I had a quick look at your commit.
I wondered if hints become mandatory if buttons should be disabled if there is no hint data.
But there should be no reason for hints to be mandatory if the probe distances are long enough

On Basic Probe.
Inside corners
Fails with identical behaviour to my video.  There is no provision to add hints on this scrren. Should not need them.

Inside Pockets.
Works but.
Error message with no hints is not very clear. Says probe is too big.(0 diameter pocket would explain that)
With the probe centred roughly in the centro of a 50mm x 50mm pocket, It goes the wrong way before descending.
I think the conditional in the sketch woul ddo part of it but you would also need to alter the direction to move at the end...

You need to put the probe where the green symbol of the probe button dictates.
The 'wrong way' move is probably explained by this. The green symbol is on the edge of the part, so it needs to back away from the edge before dropping down and probing.

I set up my probe on my test mill. So far I found versa probe more straight forward.
More testing to do.

I found the downside of versa is the top surface probe is on a different tab.

Sorry, I did not draw the descent which happens at 1.
The inside corner still sounds wrong. Going the wrong way is the very first  move it makes. Even if I had of put it closer to the corner it has no idea where the corner is so it would still go the wrong way before descending.
There is not really any reason for it ever to go the wrong way on start in any probing mode.

Please pick a specific probe button for discussion.
Your diagram is for edge probing, then you just talked about corner probing.

Either one of them need to back away from the edge (or corner) before moving the probe down. If this is what you mean by 'wrong way' it is expected behavior. If the probe immediately went down it would trip on the edge.

The probe routine knows approximately where the corner is because they is where you are supposed to jog the probe to before starting the routine.

in you diagram, you used the X+ probe button (center right), then you shouldn't start the probe in the middle of the pocket. It should start with the probe in line with the right edge a few mm above it.
