Differential encoder hard crashes the PC MESA7i77

Well,  LinuxCNC found the card so it does not seem to be an issue
with the PCIE slot or the 6I25 bus interface.

What is the actual error when you have the 7I77 connected?

 

HEY! I am so dumb I didn't see your reply till just now. I actually bought another 6i25 convinced I had an issue with the card.

ANYWAY...I don't get any errors when I launch LinuxCNC, just a hard, full computer shutdown if the 7i77 is connected to the 6i25. If the 6i25 is NOT connected to the 7i77, I just get the Linuxcnc error i posted earlier.

So...I put in the NEW 6i25 just now, hooked up the 7i77 and launched Linuxcnc...and it DIDNT CRASH this time! Exciting. Now i just get a new Linuxcnc error:

 

Looks like the firmware wants an update? Do I do this with mesaflash? 

Yes, you need to install firmware that matches the 7I77

You first need to download the 5i25.zip from

 www.mesanet.com/software/parallel/5i25.zip

unzip and then change to the configs/hostmot2 directory and then

sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --write 5i25_7i77x2.bit --reload


 

still cant seem to find the board 

kind of weird that i can see it talking to a 5i25 in the error file

Did you try running mesaflash after running LinuxCNC?
 

yes, mesaflash still says 5i25 not found

 

Can you do a

lspci -vv  | grep -A 10 2718 > pci.txt

and post pci,txt here?

 

Here we are! I super appreciate it...so does my wife   Ive been trying to make this work all day

The problem is this:

Region 0: Memory at fce00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=64K]

Which is likely something the BIOS did so may be fixable if you have access to BIOS PCI settings
I will take a look into what is needed to get mesaflash to re-enable the memory region (lLinuxCNC does this)
