I think there's a chance the buildbot v2.5_branch package has the fix

Yep there it is in 2.5...
So you could download the 2.5 deb from buildbot, I'm not sure what apt get will do...

Just to top-off the thread, I finally pulled down a new EMC2.5 version via Ubuntu's update manager and it appears that this problem is now gone. Thanks to all for the help in tracking it down as well as the guys that patched it up! Appreciate the community help.
