I took the safe route and bought the hard drive with 2.8 preinstalled to eliminate at least one potential configuration goof up.
To my eye the HAL doesn't appear to have 2.8 features for the gantry.
If I an interpreting the 2.8 documentation correctly, neither my HAL nor my INI appear to take advantage of the 2.8 joints_axes structure. Is there a argument I need for pncconf?

You might want to consider switching to version 2.8 (not that Pncconf can do the tandem limit switch there either) but some elements of a gantry configuration are much simpler there.

(If you scan through the changes you might get some feel for how much better-suited for a gantry it now is)

it may be that your particular 2.8 is from before the merge of JA.
