In theory this might be an advantage, except that it wouldn't be a replacement, it would end up being yet another schismatic medium (probably)
xkcd.com/927/ comes to mind.
If we were starting from scratch, then IRC would be an odd choice. But the point is that we are where we are.
Personally I hate forums like this. :-/ It's a real chore to read all the messages every day, whereas with Ye Olde Usenet you could just keep pressing spacebar while the messages scrolled past, and be sure you had read everything. Mailing lists give you the same thing.
One problem with a forum is that folk can ask a question, get an answer and feel that it worked really well for them, but they never see the bigger picture.
Gitter works well as a "persistent" IRC analogue.

I would have agreed with you 5 years ago, but now it's 2019 and the old guard might consider bringing in young blood and upgrading the communications platform for the project.

But, if you want to start a Discourse, feel free. Don't go thinking that anyone in "in charge" of LinuxCNC. Don't go asking for permission, there isn't anyone who will feel that they can give it.

For me personally the biggest issue is with having another account, i have way to many of them.
Otherwise as i mentioned, i did use it and it works nicely and a lot of people is using it (mostly for spamming), but i just do not see the value in having another account/app to carry.
That being said, most probably i will join in there.

I'm with Andy. I like the forum and the time zone for me means that the IRC is buzzing at a very unfriendly hour...

I totally get where you're coming from, but I have found that Discord consolidates accounts since it is inherintly multi-topic, like Reddit. My additional accounts are always a result of this style of forum than a service like Discord. Or Slack, slack is like these forums in that you need an account for each topic, which is one area where Discord really excels.

Just looking back at yesterday and this morning there was only 4 hours of quiet on the IRC out of 24 hours...

Incidentally, I logged in yesterday and ended up here:
discordapp.com/channels/144874964586201088/144874964586201088
Which contains some familiar names from the IRC;
Google also finds:
discordapp.com/channels/384743579345485826/384743579345485828
But that looks like the other EMC2, the guys with the evil lawyers.
