I have a Lenovo M93 that I want to run linuxcnc on. What is acceptable latency for use with a mesa 7i96 card? Preliminary testing below.

You need to be running the PREEMPT_RT kernel for the 7i96

If you follow these instructions, its pretty quick. I know there are other instructions for Mint 20 but I think there were a couple of niggles and I know this one works.

Is there anything wrong with the Mint 19.2 ISO or is it just because it's 19.2 not 19.3 that no one is recommending it ?

To tell you the truth, I used 19.3 becasue I already had an ISO burnt to USB so I just used that and picked up Tommy's process afterwards.

Oh ok, just thought there might have been an issue with the 19.2 ISO.

I thought with the only hard bit being updating the key from the keyserver, as I forgot what it was on the repo, it was an easier solution. Burn the ISO to USB, boot, install and off you go, Linuxcnc & RT_PREEMPT kernel is installed along with Mint.

I just installed it on my mill a couple of weeks ago, and I really prefer over debian....much to my surprise.

The system I set up with Tommy's shortcut was on my Odroid H2+. It uses a 2GB dual NIC card and its so new there is no driver support in the Linux distros. So I downloaded the driver on Windows, formatted the unused space on the Mint USB stick, and installed that on odroid just by double clicking the driver and gdebi did the rest.

I think my plasma cutter is running on Mint 17.3 and it was really a mission back then compiling the kernel to get preempt_rt. But yes, Mint is the most user friendly distro I've used. Not that I've used many after I found Mint....

Have you used the H2+ in anger yet ?
I'm thinking it maybe an interesting bit of kit.

No not yet. I've not had any quality plasma time for a while... i'd like to make a control box with it and a 7i73 that a monitor mounts to with some controls below somehow. I have it designed in my head. I just have to work out how to design it in Fusion 360 and then make it with my latest plasma accessory.

I spent half an hour checking latency and it will be fine.
