Emco compact 5 Pc pin out help was created by Kosta79
Hello Everyone,  I recently bought an Emco Compact 5 PC lathe,  it was working great up until Linux lost its password on it's memory...  keeping me from logging in to the os.  So, being a Mach 3 guy and thinking I could install windows/mach3 on the computer that came with emco,  I tried going down this avenue and ended being very unstable and locking up randomly.   I reinstalled Linux debian with 2.8.2 linux cnc, succesfully, and am having alot of trouble getting the emco going again...  After alot of reading and learning a bit about Linux,  I have to say I am completely lost (lol)

So far I've tried loading a pre set Hal file that I downloaded from a post on the forum,  no success in loading the Hal in the Linuxcnc it gives and error. Tried numerous work arounds no success..  So I thought I would reach out and ask the community..

Also, I'm having trouble finding info on the emco board in my lathe..  or any information on the board...It's the A6A control board I tried manually inputting the pin for the x and z steppers. And general basic setup for an unmodified  control board on the Emco.

Thank you for all your help and what information has already been posted

Well, this might take a while, but you could start by showing the error message that you get. We can work through them.

FWIW LinuxCNC is rather better for lathes than Mach3. (there isn't so much to choose between them for stepper mills, it has to be admitted)

Please also upload pictures of the lathe and control boards and stepper drivers.
Also there are ways to get into a linux pc without the password and or at least grab the old hal files if you did not overwrite the hard drive.

Hi, considering there has not been any activity in this thread since March I hope it is ok if I borrows it. I bought an Emco 5 PC but the computer with LinuxCNC was broken so I downloaded Debian 10 and LinuxCNC 2.8.2 to a new one. I also downloaded the Half-fullstepMorph files found in this thread: forum.linuxcnc.org/30-cnc-machines/26757...cnc-painless?start=0.

Despite that this was my first ever experience of Linux it did well and I have no problem starting LinucCNC with Half-FullstepMorph-profile active. My problem is that I can not control the lathe from LinuxCNC. When I starts LinuxCNC and powering the lathe I can not push "Toggle Machine Power" in the interface because it is grayed out, to solve this I just put the computer to sleep and then wake it up again. When I do so I can hear a "click" from the lathe and the "Toggle Machine Power" is not grayed anymore.

The problem now is that it does not matter which button on the computer I press, the lathe does not do anything at all. The DRO-coordinates at the interface changes when I press the arrows but the lathe refuses to do anything. Is there a way to see if there is any connection between LinuxCNC and the lathe?

Debian 10
LinuxCNC 2.8.2
A6BA9B1012 (Lathe serial number.)
PCI - parallel: www.amazon.se/dp/B000W2P15A/ref=pe_24982...03747021_TE_SCE_dp_1

I would be very glad if anyone has any suggestions to solve the issues.

Thanks,
Paul

Has the lathe ever moved a motor under LinuxCNC control?
If it has, then it is probably an enable config problem.
Are the steppers free or locked when LinuxCNC thinks that they are moving?

If it has never moved then I would be concerned that perhaps the parallel port config is wrong, or even that the parport is not compatible.

Thanks for answering. According to the last owner the lathe was used under LinuxCNC control but he was using his computer and I am using mine. Excuse my lack of knowledge but what do you mean with free or locked steppers? The steppers are installed at the lathe if that is what you mean.

When the machine is powered on, can you turn the motors by hand?
Also, putting the PC to sleep will cause LinuxCNC to lose all functionality, most probably, never tried it.
Inverting the e-stop pin in hal should make it possible to enable the machine.

I can move the motors by hand when the machine i powered off but when the machine is powered on the motors are locked. Concerning the E-stop LinuxCNC behaves exactly the same way regardless of whether the lathe is connected to the computer or not. Even if there is no cable between the computer with LinuxCNC and the lathe I still have to make the computer sleep and then wake it up again for the "Toggle Machine Power" to be pressable. May it still be the e-stop pin in hal that is the issue?

Yes.
You can omit the line or invert the input pin by adding the "-not" at the end of that line.

I really appreciate the help I get from you! I attached the HAL-file I am using. The only lines I could see mentioning e-stop is line 214 and 215, I tried to put a # before both lines but the result is the same as before. I am afraid that I do it wrong or even opened the wrong file...
