New build and confusion was created by Jarhead
Hello,
So I'm finally gonna build my first Plasma table and am finding things have changed quite a bit since the last time (few years ago) I had planned to build it. The design is done, basically copying my router table, and I'm now looking into the electronics portion. This is where the confusion comes in.
Surprisingly little info on plasma builds on most of the forums I follow, it's like no one is building them anymore, But anyway...
I was going to follow my router table and use UCCNC as the controller with a Neuron THC and Ohmic Sensor. But I've been hearing about LinuxCNC and it's THC. Seems to be built in now, is that correct? If so, what's that means for hardware? Will I not need a Neuron (or other) THC for LinuxCNC?

I guess I'm just wondering what components I would need 'today'. Most of what I find, even on here, is years old, has anything changed since then?
What I can find on here is the Mesa 7196s seems to be the way to go, again, years ago. Is it still a good choice?
Any info provided on anything electronics based would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Mesa 7i96S and THCAD, several versions of THCAD depending on the plasma source.
Not sure where you got the stale info, but some companies started selling plasma cutting machines with LinuxCNC as a result of how good it has become for plasma.
Here are some loooong topic on building plasma cutting machines, one has also a full list of parts and detailed pictures of almost everything, 4 of those are in daily use for several years, 7 finished.

I don't know where you are looking. Plasma is a very active topic
Look at the docs for 2.9 for QT Plasmac linuxcnc.org/docs/2.9/html/plasma/qtplasmac.html
Also look in these forum sections:
Plasmac: forum.linuxcnc.org/plasmac
Plasma and laser: forum.linuxcnc.org/plasma-laser

Finally. to get to 2.9. the easiset way is to follow the docs. linuxcnc.org/docs/2.9/html/getting-start...etting-linuxcnc.html

Just to clarify, I said "Surprisingly little info on plasma builds on most of the forums I follow", you both are making it seem like I said on this forum, I didn't and didn't mean to offend anyone.
I'm sure plasma is an active topic on this forum, but on other forums plasma builds seem to be years old, as I said. So I've been looking for "what's new" and that's what brought me back here.

Thanks for the links Tom, I skimmed so far, will dig deeper but it seems like most of what I saw is about the building of the table itself. As I said, I have the build done, just looking for the electronics part.
You suggested the 7196s, so I guess it's still considered relevant. I'll go with that one then. I'll look into the THCAD to see the model differences.
Any suggestions for an ohmic sensor? Just meaning is there any that will or won't work with LinuxCNC?

Here's a screenshot of my table. Found a design on youtube I liked so I modeled off that and made improvements as needed.

Not offended, no worries, internet has become a wealth of bad information.
The Plasma primer has also info about getting an ArcOK signal on plasma sources that do not have it, ohmic probing with a relay and another power supply, etc.
As for electronics, grounding and shielding is very important on plasma machine due to huge amounts of interference caused by pilot arc start and the cutting currents.
Both links also deal with electronics but hard to find as they are very long.
Rod also explains in more detail things, me not so much.
