sounds like graphics drivers likely loaded just fine

Have you made any edits to the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf yet?

Something I think to try, before running startx:
sudo systemctl status display-manager --no-pager -l
and
systemctl status lightdm --no-pager -l
If you can, snap a good photo of each command's result and post here that will save you lots of typing.

I have done "no edits to any files" dont know how to do that. and would not modify anything while trouble shooting a setup.

the 2 lines of code do nothing but take me back to the prompt.

in lookin at how to connect linuxcnc to outputs to the motors i see it utilizes the
printer port which i do not have on this laptop and that means i prob. would have to use the rj45 which i dont know if i have the mind power to do that. i have to look at that closer.
But would still like to solve the login thing so i don't have to do the ctrl alt f3 and then the startx thing in just lookin at the running program. which may not be a big thing at this point.

Sorry, I can't figure out how it can return nothing. It should display the status of lightdm. And if lightdm does for some reason not exist, it should complain.

Does it work when you try those two commands after you're logged in and run startx?

What make/model laptop is this? Some laptops do not run linuxcnc correctly.

the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5737, 43GTQzi, Bios A07 started out it's life with Windows 8 on it

I'll re type the command lines and again and see what comes up. but not right away
