It is my understanding that for the Debian version of LinuxCNC libeditreadline-dev is being used as a GPL-v2 compliant alternative to libreadline and to avoid GPL-v3 conflicts. I have asked the Clear Linux team to see if that can be an option for them too.

Linuxcnc 2.9.2 and 2.93 images for Raspberry Pi 4b & 5

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

I was able to enable i2c, but the instructions say use “sudo i2cdetect -y 1”, 1 doesn’t seem to exist for me, I can only detect 11 and 12 and neither show the 0x36 address.
I have confirmed that the pins are making good contact, so bad connection is ruled out.
Could it be the kernel configuration?

Can the startup errors be due the pullup resistors that has 7i80hd
and all pins before starting linuxcnc are at 5V ?

To turn on i2c

edit as superuser /boot/broadcom/config.txt and uncomment the lines relate to i2c.

then edit as superuser /etc/modules and either add i2c-dev or uncomment if it is commented out

reboot

That will get i2c up and enabled

Linuxcnc 2.9.2 and 2.93 images for Raspberry Pi 4b & 5

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Hey guys, I’ve add a Geekworm x1201 UPS to my Pi5 as I often get power outages at my place and wanted a bit of extra security.
I was able to access and change the EEPROM to get it to charge and power the pi5 from the batteries. But to change anymore detailed settings, like battery monitoring, It’s telling me I need to open Raspi-config. Which I obviously can’t using the Linuxcnc image.

Here a link to the detailed instructions, suptronics.com/Raspberrypi/Power_mgmt/x120x-v1.0_software.html
unfortunately it’s all for the Raspberry Pi OS.

Is there anyway I can make this work or am I wasting my time?

Looks like it supports function 2 which would be a more natural
way to do bit input

Probably here, as far as i can tell, everything else will inevitably lead to here, and google still seems to find the forum easily.

I have placed a simplified version of the configuration on the example of one of the most common 7i96s boards, as well as a diagram. They work just like the more complex options.

input1 is at 0x0080 address
input2 is at 0x0081 address
and so on..
The previous config reads all inputs correct
but displays many errors at startup after startup doesn't display errors

There's some good hal components just floating around in this forum that were never submitted to linuxCNC. I just found one to "blink" an LED during a search since surprisingly, there isn't a simple way to do it in HAL at the moment. I tested it quick and it seems to work fine.
forum.linuxcnc.org/24-hal-components/29015-hal-blink-component

Not sure if a collection thread already exists but, I've found others over the years. One was just a lump of code that Andy threw in a thread that I copied out and had a friend improve a bit. I submitted that as the "spindle-monitor" component which I guess we forgot to credit so the maintainer just authored it eventually.

I figure there's some other useful components out there that are maybe not well tested, or maybe not 100% finished. If anything like that is floating around post it up!

I've suggested blink.comp be added to mainline (or stuck in a collection thread) ever since I found it.  It's a great component.

Tommy - is there anywhere we can cook up a library with user components? Like on the necro-wiki page, but less obscure?

Of course an 'untested' disclaimer along with installation instructions would be helpful.

I've been trying to explain this for sometime, what would really really help, is if you shared your configuration, wiring diagrams and setup files. I really can't help you unless you post these things up. No one here can help you without seeing all of those things.

scurve trajectory planner

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

For awareness:

The scurve planner has some behaviour changes around:
motion.feed-hold
motion.adaptove-feed

Under the standard planner per documentation the effects of these pins can be enable or disabled through the use of M53 and M52 respectively.  These M codes are not supported under scurve.  The effects of these pins are always active.

If this departure from current behaviour is material and of concern then we would be interested to understand what the "real world" down sides are to this implementation.

Thanks - James.

I've never used a feed-hold disable function; I suspect it's a legacy feature intended for machines run by operators who are not 'allowed' to really manipulate the controls.  Or the programmer sees a feature to be cut where feed-hold would lead to issues (drill/tool rubbing and work-hardening the part) and turns off feed hold for that program segment.

Neither have I used adaptive-feed, but I could imagine a situation where the programmer or operator would like to turn it off/on.  Perhaps using block-skip in the program for segments (roughing, maybe?) where adaptive feed is appropriate but not fully proven out.

I'm appreciate your help!
I will try to figure it out.
But an understandable manual would be better (to not bother other people with beginner stuff). I hope Andy will do it sometime.

The maual is pretty comprehensive, but I agree it could use some help.

Problem for most beginners - and anyone confused on a particular topic - is that the MAN pages don't have a lot of context.  It's very difficult to understand what a MAN page is all about with no underlying basis for understanding the terminology or jargon.

And it's likely just as hard for the author of a component MAN page to know what context or examples to include so a beginner-level audience can understand the component or subject without too much difficulty.

Final problem is that 'beginner-level' is a vague term.  I've noticed that people who frequent the forum have a wide range of experience; some have programming skills, others have mechanical experience, some have electrical, and so forth.

Writing a help manual targeted at the lowest common denominator means including tons of info many people will find annoyingly superfluous.  The author(s) just don't know what the audience already knows... hence the forum questions.

I was able to figure it out in the hal. I just used
-not
to invert all my inputs. My estop is even working too!

It MUST have 2 switches, one for each side, this can do gantry squaring every time the machine is homed.

Okay this makes sense ill fire one and get it wired in. How would the hal differ below is my best attempt.
