This seems very good for use with mesa ethernet card + extra ethernet for internet

Mesa card config : 7I97T -> 7I85 -> 7I70 + 7I71

Category: HAL

Could some one please assist with an example HAL to show with the following configuration.

7I97T main board -> P1 connector -> 7I85
7I85 -> serial port 1 -> 7I70
7I85 -> serial port 2 -> 7I71

All the tools I have been testing with do not seem to output a configuration that will load in Linuxcnc.

Further to this, the firmware available for the 7I97T with 7I85 does not provide access to the i / o on the 7I97T board shown in the pin out test. Does using the 7I97T + 7I85d firmware then disable the i / o on the 7I97T ?

Thank you in advance.
Matt

You may want to have a look at this, might help with deciding. The Mesa manuals are a good reference as well.

It's hard enough getting CAM for Linux on x86, ARM is going to be like hen's teeth (meaning well supported and stable and not beta).

I don't know if there is a SPI driver like the RPi from Linuxcnc (this is a dedicated driver for only the Rpi3/34), as per the RPI the /dev/spidev driver probably wont give you the speed you are after.

Unless you already have a 7c80 or 7c81 I'd tend to stay away from the SBC's and go for a small form factor x86 system (if space is a concern) and an ethernet mesa card. That way you wont be stuck when you need to update\replace the computer. Ethernet is everywhere, SPI seems to be the realm of the non-x86 platforms, and each SBC will require it's own driver, which requires someone to develop & maintain it and you are at the whim of the manufacturers\dealers regarding availability........and the infinite number of models.

Another thing to take into account some of these SBC's require messing about with the uboot loader, or whatever flavour of boot loader is used, to use a realtime kernel.

They have their place, it just depends how much time you are willing to spend and whether it will be obsolete in a couple of months to a year.

Mill Project, Looking for driver Board advice

Category: Driver Boards

Hello everyone, this is my first real cnc re-build so please correct any misconceptions I might have, I'm excited about the possibility of converting to running with Lcnc, But I wanted to run past my machine configuration in front of some more experienced eyes before making any mesa purchases.

Currently there are three axis being used for motion and a fourth being used for rotating the toolchanger carousel, all are servos running analogue. I am considering removing the servo being used for the atc and replacing it with a stepper, so I can then use the servo as a fourth axis. The motion servos Amp seems to be capable of running step or ana, (or maybe not, see attached img from the servopack manual) but I know for sure that the fourth servo is ana only. This seems to lock me into using something like the 7I97T but I am also seeing daughter boards like the 7I36 that seem like they would allow me to use something else. so I am really wondering what Is the best way to use a mixed ana servo/stepper setup as far as mesa cards (if its even possible) or if its something I should just abandon and get another amp and servo in the future if I want to do fourth axis. I am also going to be needing a reasonably large amount of IO for the pneumatics system, six outputs at a minimum but more is better, so if I was going to use a daughter card it might be for that.

Another thing I am wondering about it the spindle, I am currently being shipped the documentation for my Spindle controller so I am unsure exactly how it interfaces with the motion controller But I see that some cards provide a dedicated option for the spindle while others don't. I am wondering if the spindle is going to take the place of one of the axis and how that works on one of the analogue cards.
in my ideal configuration it seems like its 5/6 axis (3motion+atc+4thaxis+spindle?) but the mesa card configuration that would achieve this is beyond my current understanding.

Appreciate any input, thanks.

Well, I want to understand how a five or six axis configuration is made.

With pncconfig, XYZA is possible. But how to go beyond that?

i did all that through pncconf. spindle enable out on output#5. i even have to invert it or the spindle light on the mesa board will stay on until i go into linuxcnc and turn it off. yeah, i don't know why it does that. its configured just as the pic you posted

Just verified that this (pictured setup) works as expected:

M3 (or M4) turns output 5 on
M5 turns it off

interesting, so basically some one has to take the initiative collect the money, hire the programmer, follow the project and then release the results to the community.

None of this really works well in practice. it needs (again) someone like tormach to just pay someone to do it for THEIR needs, and we get the spoils.

Otherwise, we can sit and watch and wait and just be happy.
