Probably a bit hotter up Rods way, but to be fair Queensland is 20 years and 1 hour behind the rest of Australia.

Thats a bit harsh! Nobody understands that half of Queensland already has half the state with 20 minutes daylight saving built in just by the longitude. Eventually, the rest of the world will come to realise the health benefits of normal time. I think Trumpy is on to it!

Talk to concreters up your way in Summer. Most of the ones I worked with on civvy sites would start at 5am rather than 6am to beat the sun. I much preferred it in NSW, that extra hour when its not so hot makes a damn difference.  I guess for office workers and the like it's much of a muchness either way, but out on site when there's no trees, no grass, no shade, just dirt and excavators as far as the eye can see it makes a difference.  Even in NSW if we could get away starting at 5am in summer when I was doing playground installations we'd jump at the chance. Tho it didn't help much when we were up in Griffith in January.

Are these a good starting point and still viable or are obsolete? the racktoolchange sample readme is pointing to an old EMC patch..

New ethercat / probe basic control for minimonster

Category: CNC Machines

That board is rather expensive. Can get beckhoff kit for less.

I laid out the terminal block rail, seems like everything will be fairly simple so far.

Just check the currency. My link was probably in AUD which is the pacific peso these days about 0.60 to the USD.
Dont forget it includes several equivalent modules to beckhoff. Input, Output, Encoder, MPG counter, Analog 0-10v. Beckhoff encoder and I/O was over AUD $800 in 2021

The dumification of humanity through internet

Category: Off Topic and Test Posts

I think from memory very early in the piece, the US weights and measures or congress legislated that one inch was exactly 25.4mm
Its not really about a simple tape measure. SI units come into their own when doing any engineering calculations. eg power in HP (a page long calc) vs kW (a couple of lines). Now most engineering in the US is done in SI  I am told. I think to avoid loosing another space ship.

Yes, it will be really helpful if you can share this sample and how it's implemented step by step, even if the topic is about probe basic rack implementation it should merge on it somehow

You could also try installing Debian Trixie from the debian image now its available
raspi.debian.net/daily-images/

Note that this will not install a desktop, just a console but it will have a preempt_rt kernel available. I did do up a doc on doing this for Debian Bullseye which will basically be the same.

docs.google.com/document/d/1S0K-UBlXnsYC...b_0/edit?usp=sharing

The name for xfce package might have changed search the debian packages for XFCE to get the right name today.

Once again thanks mate.

I'm going to play around with making an RPi5 image based on Trixie\Testing so I'll give it a whirl.

You might as well use the provided image becasue you basically end up with Trixie (with 6.1.2 kernel) and 2.9.4 already installed.

looking for a post processor to be used with Fusion 360

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I'm using the one linked in this post successfully so far.  forum.linuxcnc.org/plasmac/38438-plasmac...t-processors?start=0

I haven't tested the center-punch functionality, but did test the small hole functionality on 3/8" holes and they turned out pretty well.

A couple things I learned along the way:
make sure merge circles if unchecked when posting
if you have multiple setups, you have to go to the operations tab in the post window and select them all.  They aren't all selected by default.

From memory there was some disparity between the English definition of billion and the US.
English was 12 zeros whilst the US was 9.

Look if NASA can have stuff ups with one team using imperial measurements and the other using metric any kind of stuff up and confusion is possible. Mars Climate Orbiter it was.

One thing I didn't know is that the definition of inch, foot, yard, chain, blah, blah is actually based on the inch being 25.4 mm. Tho once again different countries early in the 20th century had different ideas. From the doco I saw it was implied that the invention of slip gauges or "joe blocks" kind of pushed it to the front.
Carl Edvard Johansson the guy accredited with the invention of them modified his Wife's sewing machine to make the first set.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauge_block

Look under the bit titled history.

Ethercat installation from repositories - how to step by step

Category: EtherCAT

No you'll need to use the RPi with a 6.1.x kernel, which should work. Rod has raised the issue regarding Ethercat not supporting 6.12 (anything higher than 6.1 I'd guess).

That's the trap when releasing a new image, some will want the latest kernel and then some, like yourself will require an earlier version. Can't keep everyone happy.

Sorry for any confusion and such, Ethercat is too rich for me, but once it's all sorted I'll be sure to test the Ethercat install works, wont be able to test any actual hardware but the actual install and building of modules I'll test.

And a final thanks for actually supplying the messages and such, much much better than "doesn't work".

Cheers
Rob
