Thank you, i checked on the machine and you are right, they have integrated flyback diodes. I will check wether they draw more than 350mA (i can't imagine they do)

Another question:
Since i have the full documentation fory old siemens 810t control i can check all sorts of servo calibration values from the original machine data. Certain 8-bit codes can be decoded using the docs. You i try using that method or would you do it from scratch as it it is a new machine?

I better don't say it out loud, but it all looks pretty straightforward to me :P

The I/O board is almost the same as the 7i77, theoretically i can connect 24V power, servo control and all IOs with original wiring and get straight into configuration mode.

Reality check incoming....

(PREVIEW, stop) is some other GUI command, in Flex you uncheck the show program button like I showed above. I have no control over what LinuxCNC does when you open a program, I can only turn off or on the preview.

I mean connect all drives ENA+ lines to OUT0-
All drive ENA- lines to ground, and OUT0+ to +5V

Thank you for everything so far.

I just looked at the 7i96s manual, and on page 10 I see that TB3 pin 13 is labeled "OUT0-", so I guess I was on the right track, sort of.

It's still not self-explanatory what you mean by OUT0+ to +5v, although you sort of partially explain it on page 14. Do you want me to connect my +5v power supply to TB3 pin 14? Doesn't that make it an input? Does every output (pins 13, 15, 17, 19) need its own power supply connection (pins 14, 16, 18, 20)?

You could avoid a lot of this back and forth by just publishing a typical use case wiring diagram. When I have this completely figured out, I am going to edit the top post, to accurately reflect the working system. Both for future me, and for others coming here to figure it out. That will hopefully also include all of the HAL changes, etc. I have seen other posts about Mesa boards and Clearpath SDSK, but they are sprawling conversations lacking a single definitive graphic at the top level that is accurate and well-labeled. I don't feel obligated to read the contents of the entire internet in order to hook up a servo motor.

I have heard great things about working LinuxCNC systems, but I have never heard a single positive experience from anyone setting one up.

Look out for an updated graphic. I'll be modifying the one above for the next hour or so, with my second cup of coffee.

IHSV60 integrated servo moves when removing power or disabling it

Category: CNC Machines

I guess one way is to use a normally closed relay/SSR
to power the drives disable inputs until LinuxCNC energizes the
relay with say motion.motion-enable. Its still awkward as it requires
control power be present to disable the drives.

I know this is common in step drives as it allows the enable input to be
ignored so simplifies wiring and probably results if fewer technical
support costs, but it is really counter-intuitive

I wonder if the setup software can change the enable polarity
over the RS-232 port?

IHSV60 integrated servo moves when removing power or disabling it

Category: CNC Machines

The drives gets 5V constantly when disabled. To enable them I have to remove power from the enable pin. For me this logic is counter intuitive, meaning that if a wire breaks, the drive enables(the opposite of the logic used in E-Stops).

I'm looking for a way to invert that logic, but drive wise I couldn't find anything

EDIT: the drive manual indicates the following: "SW5 dial code switch sets input edge, off means rising edge and on means falling edge."
I don't know if this is going to change things, either on the enable, or both the enable and STEP/DIR(changing from falling to rising and vice versa shouldn't change anything about step/dir, am I right?)

my tool table looks like this:

T1 P1 X0 Y0 Z0 A0 B0 C0 U0 V0 W0 D2.00000 I0 J0 Q0 ;touch probe

Z0 is included in all of them. When changing tools to a new tool, strange Z values occur which are then entered into the tool table at Z when the tool is changed.

The new milling cutter then has a value of 155.34 at Z and then wants to travel 214.45, for example.

even though my maximum travel distance is only 145 in Z

The 7I77/7I77D have no flyback diodes but they do have Zener --> gate
slew rate limiters. These dissipate the inductive energy in the output MOSFETS
This is only good up to 60 mA or so. If the solenoids have more that 60 mA  current draw,
they must have flyback diodes (and they must draw no more than 350 mA)

If LinuxCNC runs and you don't get communication errors ("error finishing read!")
Your issue is not likely Ethernet related.

All drive ENA- lines to ground, and OUT0+ to +5V

This means when OUT0 is enabled, all drives are enabled
it really doesn't make sense to have per drive enables
as it wastes outputs and there is typically no operational
advantage with individual enables.

I would like to thank you again for your help

it's a bit of acrobatics with the computer mouse,

after several attempts, it seems to me that it would be much better with a single, shared multiplier for crosshair angle or also for circle diameter

Basic Probe and Versa Probe are two different programs.

It appears to me that Basic Probe has fewer options than Versa Probe.

The documentation for the two should be separate as to not confuse the reader. I see if I can add some value to the docs.

Got a 6i25 and 7i77d in front of me and i am ready get things started.
I got myself an old office PC to get things going and will migrate to a DIN Rail PC with a proper touchscreen once everything's running.
A few questions straight after studying the 7i77 manual and ripping out lots of cables from the machine.
Can i sink solenoid power straight to the 7i77? Does it have some flyback diodes integrated? Is there a max current rating for those sinking inputs? Original Siemens IO cards had direct connection to all solenoids.
Best,
Lukas
