FWIW - When I turn the voltage up on the power supply the amperage climbs, but nothing ever smoked... and then when I tried them individually they powered right up.

One (unlikely) possibility is that the 50mA (or so) that they take is overloading the supply.

Anyway, it seems that you have some sort of axis and three working sensors.

Just a quick update. I got sidetracked on some other projects and just got back to this one. I ended up replacing the cheap 'slot sensors' with
these
, which I am happy to report are working great... at least in HAL.
The last sensor to replace is the proximity sensor for the breakaway. I decided to go with this one. Andy pointed out that my current prox appears to be a knock off of this one, so I got the PNP version of the 'real' one. I will know more tomorrow when I get it installed.
