There is also some good info on PID tuning here:

Nope, your avatar is from a movie and a book named "hitch-hikers guide through the galaxy", the book has written "don't panic" on the cover with big letters !
If I get this correctly, the quote was from Ronald's previous message. Have updated my response to make that linkage.@Joco, off topic,
quote from ? :
I have a head the size of a planet ....

Dear James,
This is great information.
So, because of the great info from you and AndyPugh, I will now finaly launch and purchase all the required core-components.
I updated the Functional-Diagram (As PDF attached) , maybe any of you notice some inconsistencies.
Using pncconf, I will also post the initial HAL & INI files generated by Pncconf, maybe you can show to initial steps what you would "touch" or modify to the one generated. Then I'll try to take it from there and report on how the System Responds.
P.s:
Where can I find more examples of builds, like the one I started to draw-down? Does any of you have a good source of Block-Diagrams + HAL&INI's for LinuxCNC converts ?
But Great feedback so far and great work guys, thanks !

Dear James, dear Andy,
please find attached what I have found out so far in connecting my Lathe to a MESA 7i96+7i85s.
I used pncconf for the 7i96, but had to choose the 7i84 daughterboard, as the 7i85 is not found in pncconf.
My Assignment you can find here in the PDF:
Then I generated the HAL & INI File, also here attched:
And now comes the magic:
1. What do I need to do, to correct the pin-mapping made for the 7i84 in pncconf, to work for the 7i85 ?
2. How would (After a successfull 7i85 pin mapping) the HAL/INI File modification-process look like, to get a full loop-back control in place for spindle, Linear-X & Linear-Z Encoders, using the example I generated so far?
I think after these two guiding steps from your side, I would be able to start crawling (And hopefully also help other Linuxcnc starters with this example).
Best regards,
Ronald

Adding a 7I84 will not be helpful
To add encoder feedback you would start with a plain 7i96 configuration
and then add the encoder setup in the hal file and encoder scaling in the
ini file. Then you would change the position feedback source from the stepgen
to the encoder.
To do this you should start with a working open loop stepper system

Have a look at this thread:
forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuratio...-loop-setup?start=20
I think Hakan is using the same board setup that you are and he has posted his HAL and INI files. You should be able to see the required "loadrt hm2_eth_board_ip=" line that pics the needed firmware and associated parameters.
I have not gotten to the ethernet side of things myself. I'm still using PCI based kit.
Cheers.
