I got bad news from the spindle repair shop. They gave me an estimated quote of 8-10k€,,, thats a little bit to much. I think I need do it on my own.

Need to watch some Robin Renzetti videos to get in the mood to touch that thing ;)

My plan is to replace the bearings on my own and than search for a service provider, that can regrind the taper on the machine.

Hi Folks,

im still living. Wanna give you a status update:
  1. The spindle taper is fixed (Needed to be Laserwelded and reground)
  2. New spindle bearings
  3. I scraped the geometry of the Y axis. Which was a major step, and im not satisfied with the bearing points. (Geometry is excellent) When it gets warmer in Germany i want the moglice all the guide ways. Epoxy is already ordered.
  4. I reassembled the B axis. In january i hope to reassemble the spindle and mount it to the B axis. I need the spindle and B axis ready and mounted to the X axis slide to check and scrape (even for moglice scraping is needed) the geometry.
Kind regards and happy new year,
Jochen

Good to hear that you are making progress.

[edit]
I would be interested to know how tool offsets are handled in the tool table for lathe tooling in the milling spindle on such a mill-turn machine. On a lathe the tool offset is different to a mill in the sense that the length of the tool is an X-offset as opposed to a Z-offset. That is why I have made two different TCP (mill / lathe) modes in this sample config. I wonder if that is actually necessary or if lathe tool offsets are handled just like milling tools.

I will definitly check that, when the machine is back together. At the moment i cant power on the machine because most of the wires are disconnected.

just want to say that i am following closely on this as i am thinking of doing the same retro in the coming years on a mill turn like the intergrex. very interesting. i have 7 big cnc machines all 5ton plus machines running in my machine shop and love it. pretty keen to get into mill turn at some stage but don't really want to use the old controllers. they keep dying and i seem to have so much more machine once its got linuxcnc on it. but a mill turn is a big job!

if you want to swap notes on messenger or something hit me up probably best from my website beckcnc.co.nz.

i would love to chat this looks awesome

cheers

Good day,

So i would like to do a status update. I'm nearly finished with the geometry overhall.
Z Axis is complete
Y Axis is complete (But the Ballscrew is rough. Maybe it gets replaced later)
X Axis is in the process of scraping and aligning.
Sand blasted and painted a lot of parts
Cleaned the machine even more (but still a mess, just less ;)

Spindel is still in progress.
The KM63 interface is fixed with new bearing and preload adjusted. But the clamping discs that clamp the spindle for turning/broaching is bend and needs to be reground. For now i will use it as it is to get the machine into alignment and if everything works with the original Maztrol i will start the conversion to LCNC and fix the rest of the spindle.

For now the progress wont be as fast as it used to be, because my son was born recently.
