It has to be one that is not in use and an out pin... I just guessed at 10.

What exactly did you type? and did you see that when you clicked on it nothing was connected to that pin?
If it says something like parport.0.pin-02-out <= xstep then you can't do a setp on that one unless you unlink it from xstep.

I typed setp parport.0.pin-23-out and changed the number a few times

There is no pin 23... on the list to the left in Show Hal Configuration you see Pins... drill down to the parallel port and see what pins you have. Hint try 16 or 17...

Ok I tried 16, 17, 18 , 19, 7, 8, 9 etc... they alll say invalid argument!
I type in the area that says test hal command setp parport.0.pin-number here-out
Well it accepts unlink commands but not setp even using same pin??
