So, recap where you are now. What is connected etc.

oK...

As I said before pins 1-6 of the parallel port remain at a constant +5.26vdc, regardless of whether EMC is running or not. Nothing I do changes this and I mean NOTHING. Well unless I turn off the computer :-)
I'm not using the PCI card at thks time, decided to go back to the onboard port for awhile.
I have the cable connecting the c10 breakout board which is connected to the keling 4030's which are connected to the motors.

Do the other pins change? ie is it only 1-6 that are stuck? If so then I would suspect a hardware fault.

If the other pins don't work either, then I suspect you still haven't got the parport base address right.

What does dmesg say? What does cat /proc/ioports say?

The other pins float at a few milivolts but other than that they don't change either. The address I'm using is 0x378

I am not seeing what I expect to see in your proc/ioports

For fun, I just loaded hal_parport at a fictional 0x123 address on my machine. Amongst all the other stuff is

0000-001f : dma1

0123-012a : hal_parport
….
0378-037a : parport0

So, it seems that hal_parport will load anywhere you tell it to, but that might not be an actual parallel port.

In fact, I am not sure that your parallel port is active. Have you tried enabling it in the BIOS?

Sorry it took me so long to reply but I was trying something. it turns out that if I remove the +5vdc power supply from the c10 breakout board I get varying output from the output pins just as they are supposed to when EMC is running a program. So now I'm double checking my stepper wiring to see if it will work now. so give me a few minutes to re check my wiring.

well the pins vary between 1.4 and 2.5vdc while emc is running but no movement

without power on the breakout board , it will not work as the 5v is required for the onboard ic supply ,

ok i'd take it at the moment that if your seeing the voltage alternate on the port , that this is working correctly
i would expect once the c10 is connected that you will not see any voltage swing

did you use stepconf and produce a stepper configuration with only the steppers ?
connect only the steppers at this time , and disable the enable on the c10 or if your stepper drives have an enable wire , disconnect it

can you confirm the c10 is wired as www.kelinginc.net/KL-4030WithC10.pdf

and that the jumper x6 is set to pins 1&2
jumper x4 is set to pins 1&2
jumper x5 at this stage is set to 1 & 2
and finaly the enable pin is jumpered to +5v

where is the 5v supply derived from a pc supply or wall wart etc and is it capable of at least 500ma or more

at this stage leave all other limit switches disconnected at the c10 board

then run the stepconf wizard application from the desktop menu
select kelling 4030 and set stepper step & direction pins , configure pins 1 , 8,9,14,16,17 as unused
i.e only the stepper drives are used

pins are active low for these types of stepper drives , dont forget the step & direction opto + input pins on the stepper drives go to +5v supply of the c10

it is possible to check the drives at this stage , by powering up and breifly shorting out the step pin to gnd of the 5v supply or -ve with a peice of wire , each time you touch the wire the motor will move one step
so a quick on off on off , should see or hear the motor moving a few steps , if you have not already done so

in axis configuration set the driver microstepping to 8 if using default microstepping as drivers are supplied
adjust steps per rev etc to your configuration , and try the test this axis function . see what results you get

I think you have been leaving out one very important bit of information.

We have been working on the assumption that you have been measuring pin voltages at the DB25 connector on the computer, with no hardware attached.

It seems likely that the problem is actually in your hardware, and all out software suggestions have been misguided.

Can you measure the pin voltages with absolutely nothing connected other than a multimeter?
