Computer to run Linux CNC

Hello guys,

I want to buy the following spec. computer to run Linux cnc with my new 7i96e Mesa card. Is it okay ? and can it run the new GUIs such as QtPyVCP.?

mini compute size: 5"x 5"x 1.5"
Celeron J1800 2 cores
2G ram and 64G SSD
No display card (on-board type)

It may be a little slow loading QtPyVCP guis, your milage may vary.
Before you get the box make sure it supports legacy\csm boot. UEFI can cause troubles that you don't want to deal with.

Yes it can do the Job
the Newer J1900 is the same price and has some better performence but not needed on your setup

Is that one of those mini pcs in a finned box that acts as a heatsink ?

Regrading The CPU mentioned. As would seem bbsr_5a has the wrong end of the stick.

The J1900 is code name Baytrail which was released Q4'13
The J1800 is from the same family and released at the same time.

I would recommend avoiding a Baytrail Chipset. there is a long standing issue with shutdowns due to thermal run away or bugs. It was said to uninstall thermald but that did not solve my issues.

I use Gigabyte Brix J1900 from a few years ago but Clive S had problems with later ones. I Also have also used a Gigabyte Brix N3160. You can't use the internal Wifi with these PC's. Throw it way and use a USB dongle.

Yes I have had to use that for a neighbour and put win 10 on it. It runs well with that.

As used to learn that Linux CNC can be run on low spec. computer as what the Mach3 CNC does. 6 axis screen runs on my existing Mach3 cnc by an old cheap AMD computer, has not ever had problem. And its GUI is handy in use. Most new mini computer should be of UEFI, Linux CNC has problem with it, so it is quite upset. Really not want to spend much money in purchasing high spec. computer for this use.

Damn you beat me to it. I posted about that little beastie the other day. Interested in to see how it goes.

I’ll have to pull out my collect of MB cos I remember getting some good results with some older athalon setups.

An older desktop PC is bulky and has the noisy cool fan, no good. Seeming that the only one;Gigabyte Brix J1900 was mentioned, it is an old model and obsoleted, cannot be found easily. Any other suggestions..
