No machining today..... Had to order some tooling. Going to be fun machining steel with a .09" diameter endmill. Going to be like watching paint dry.
Tools will be here tomorrow so for now, no progress.

Finally got started on making my gear. Still have to setup in the lathe and do final machining, but getting closer. The gear is made from 1018 and was machined with an old chipped up 1/2" end mill for roughing. The teeth were made using a .09375" end mill. Those were new thankfully.
I will post the final product tonight or tomorrow.

I hope you checked that the gear tooth sensor can "see" that material?

ummm.... no I did not. I was just thinking that it needed a ferrous material.
Well shoot. Better check that now.

Some stainless steels are austenitic and as-such not magnetic.

Andy you got me thinking about this....
I checked my steel rack and I used 1018 for the gear and not 4140. I was going to bu the 4140 piece I had was not large enough. So I grabbed the 1018 stock instead.
Updated my posts to reflect. Thanks for bringing up the topic of material.

Doing a bit more Googling, there isn't enough Chromium in 4140 to make it a stainless anyway.
(I am not too familiar with the US steel standards)

Correct... It is pretty far off from being stainless. If 4140 had 10-12x more chromium it would stainless. Either way it would have worked fine for this gear, but I ended up using 1018 anyway so all is good.
Working on setting up a sensor mounting system now. Kinda unsure on how to align the two sensors on the teeth. I am thinking that one sensor should be centered on a root and the other sensor needs to be on the leading edge of another tooth. Never done one of these before so I am learning about the gear sensors as I go.

As long as one sensor is on an edge (any edge) while the other is half-way between two edges it will work. Make one mount slightly slottted is possible.
