Any idea how/or what I did , to cause the driver failure? , so I don’t do it again. And can this be repaired?

A common cause would be shorting the STEP/DIR outputs to some voltage outside
the 0 to 5V range (12V 24V 36V etc) even for an instant
Another possibility is >7V applied to the 7I96 5V power connection
