From what I have read, LMDE is using the Debian repositories so therefore should be able to access the Debian PREEMPT_RT package.

So to get PREEMPT_RT I think you just need to install LMDE and then type
sudo apt-get install linux-image-rt-amd64

or something similar.

See packages.debian.org/buster/linux-image-rt-amd64

But Tommy lists a few other bits and pieces required in his quick and easy install for Linuxcnc.
The day seems to be getting closer that PREMPT_RT will be in the main line of the Linux kernel. How nice would that be?

I'm a bit perplexed why Debian repos are used for getting Linuxcnc to run on Mint 20 when the Ubuntu Bionic & the Linuxcnc Mint repo work and doesn't break building a RIP installation later on.
On the Linucnc github there has been talk of some 5.6.x & 5.4.x kernel having issues with Mesa etherent.

There are other issues mixing Debian packages on a Ubuntu based system, one I have seen is building kernel modules, ie: for hardware not supported in the mainline kernel. So I would propose trying to use Ubuntu packages for Mint rather than Debian packages.

Debian packages should be fine for LMDE but do add issues for Ubuntu based Mint

That was what I was suggesting. My comment was specifically fro LMDE

Just wanted to make sure the differences were expressed, in my bone headed way ;)

Hi all

Hope this post is in the correct corner.

I had a network problem with a buster based iso taken from here

Installed the iso via usb stick on one machine (dell 980, no network problems here) and then transferred it to another (Fujitsu D956). On the Fujitsu I had no more network, although nic status leds where flickering all the time.

To overcome the problem, I did:

  1. Disable ipv6: in /etc/sysctl.conf I added "net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1", rebooted, no ip
  2. networkctl list
WARNING: systemd-networkd is not running, output will be incomplete.

    IDX LINK TYPE OPERATIONAL SETUP
      1 lo loopback n/a unmanaged
      2 enp0s31f6 ether n/a unmanaged
      3 enx801f02d64b9d ether n/a unmanaged

    3 links listed.
  3. systemctl start systemd-networkd
  4. ifup enp0s31f6

So, I finally got my network back. Should someone have a similar or same problem, it hopefully helps to resolve

Hi.
I installed the 2.8 buster iso on a Lenovo M72 i3 tiny pc. The install completed without errors but when trying to boot from the newly installed hard drive it errors stating "No operating system found"

I tried UEFI and legacy mode, quick boot disabled. The sata drive shows up in the boot menu but it doesn't boot.

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks
Henk

Sounds like grub didn't install correctly.
I'd try setting to legacy mode and reinstalling.

Was there a previous installation of Windows on the hdd ?

I have the downloaded and installed Linuxcnc 2.8 and Debian Buster- I have a user account and password, when I attempt to run a sudo command I am asked for a password but it will not accept any characters- how does a user become a superuser or administrator- all fixes for no return from hibernation or autologin require a sudo or su command; I don't find anything in the GUI - obviously I am a Windows user attempting to get Linux configured.
