If you created a root pass word you can get root access by copying and pasting the below.
su -

Then follow this:

are you sure the you can’t write. You don’t see what you are writing and the are also no white characters. Did you try typing your user password an press enter?

su - will give you root access but since you didn’t provide a root password this might not work.

sudo su - is my way to go

when you type a password in linux, all data entered is hidden so it looks like nothing is happening, just type and hit enter.

OK, that explains why I see a white box and nothing else when typing the password.
Thank You.

I did try entering my password even though nothing showed; was not accepted; I remember being asked only once for a user and password on install, nothing about root or using root as user- . I may have to delete athe partition and reinstall? Thanks for your help.

I did not create a root password on the install; I recall only one opportunity to enter a user and password- perhaps I should have used root as the user then? I am ready to delete the partition and re-install if this is the case. Thank You.

Are you sure that you have entered the PSW in the correct box.

As there can be 2 boxes the first is for the user name and then the second box pops up for the PSW

The installer deliberately does not set a root password, as if you give a root password during install then "sudo" is disabled. (???)

Are you using the official Buster ISO?
Pretty sure Andy mentioned some time ago something about removing the root password option, but i might be wrong, and do not know how it went afterwards.
Anyway, do not enter a root password, just click "next" and enter a new user and a password, twice, i think you mentioned you were asked once .... or was it another topic ... or another forum ... ???
