Am I correct a signal gets sent to the bob and when it supposed to change direction does It flick a relay. On the board .?

A relay would be unusual for a direction signal. From the parallel port pin it would likely go through an optocoupler and that would change the signal going to the motor drive.

the easiest would be to use a voltmeter and check if the voltage changes when changing direction.

measure the voltage between GND and the Outputpin that carries the direction signal on the breakout board. alternatively you can switch the wires from the direction signal of the X and Z axis and see if the symptom moves to the other axis.

On the parallel port pins you should see voltages no higher than 5V so set the volmeter to the "20V" range.

OK if I change pin3 and pin 7 x moves up only

If I change a axis pins to different pins say 8 and 9 if that stays the same ie a spins one way on both buttons does that tell me a boards gone ?
