I am going to search the web for answers, but while I do I thought I would post here as well.
BTW, this laptop does not have a parallel port and I wondered if that may be the cause.
Thanks for any help.

Nothing useful in the screenshot
Follow the steps outlined here

nothing in file errors.txt
There has to be, it captures every keystroke and print to stdout or stderr
You have to do it all from a terminal, not use the menu for linuxcnc after starting script
Open a terminal and type
script errors.txt
then
type linuxcnc
Once linuxcnc has errored and finished, press Crtl C to end script
Attach this file errors.txt,

For some reason there is nothing of use in the output to discern the reason for the crash.
Looks like you are running Ubuntu 10.04, with Linuxcnc 2.5.4.
However the sim you are running is from your own config folders not the installed configs
Try running one of the Sample Configs that were installed instead. I am just wondering if the sim you are running is an old one, perhaps pre 2.4.
That would give the 'waiting for s.axes' error

You are correct on the versions. As far as the configs., the location they are at is where the install put them. They are not my configs.
I first tried to run axis from the LiveCd, when that did not work I did an install. I am at a loss as to what to try next.
Thanks for your help!
