When i get the chance i will have a look at why it does not boot from a multisystem usb. I have no knowledge of anyone else using that here, but i use it on daily basis, having the ability to boot multiple OS from a singe USB is very nice.
Thank you.

Which multisystem are you using, I was thinking of having a go with, multibootusb.org/ I know there are few others floating around.
Update:
Mint 19.2 CNC doesn't boot
Mint 19.2 original iso doesn't boot.
Ubuntu xfce 18.04 boots.
When looking through on the on disk files the initrd has a different extension, the size is different to the original and the squashfs file is different. It would seem Mint has change these files from a standard Ubuntu setup.
One thing that may work is to format a USB disk and install grub2 then use grubs mount an iso function. I've done this kind of boot from a SATA disk, I can't see why it would work from usb.

Liveusb.info
On top there is multisystem, on the right side a bit lower is the install page.
It is by far the best multiboot i could find and the easiest to use, it is drag and drop !
Been using that for the last 10 years or so, it is constantly updated and maintained.
Both of my ISO boot properly with it, therefore i never tested the installation procedure as installing the "normal" way takes about 5 minutes longer.
Tonight i will also test PhillC's ISO and report back. Multisystem refuses to set it up complaining the iso is not supported.
Last night i installed an older Lenovo R series with Mint 19.3 xtce and Preempt-RT, it is quite usable for ethernet Mesa testing.
Tonight will have a go at Mint19.3 32bit vetsion with RTAI kernel on an old Dell D510, if i can make it work with parallel port.

I'm working on this setup.
Gotta 16GB USB Stick
Create 1 partiton on the disk (total capacity)
Format it fat32
Install grub2 to disk
copy iso images to root of usb stick
This is my grub.cfg
Boot iso from usb stick.
Had to change the Mint initrd to support mounting vfat with correct charset.
Boots std Xubuntu fine
Debian based live iso require a little different approach, will play around with that later.

Phill, tested your ISO,
wrote it to USB using "disk image writer" on a Linux Mint machine
booted from usb properly and Linuxcnc starts and works with POSIX Realtime
installed it to another USB SSD, installation process is not for the faint of heart and beginners !!!
Boots and works like a champ.
The issue of Axis starting minimized in Cinnamon DE remains.
Thank you.

Beagle, tested your second ISO :
It does boot from multisystem !
Linuxcnc works properly in live mode
Installation fails with no internet connection resolving addresses that are not reachable
Installation works with internet connection.
All in all, very nice.
Thank you.

Edited the original post to reflect the installation issue, so use this only as a Live USB version for testing.
Use Beagle's ISO for full functionality or the quick and easy howto found here:
forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc...installation?start=0
Works properly every time, on Mint Mate edition all 19.n versions.
Thank you all for the feedback.
