The only way then for ARM64 will be to build from source. gitlab.com/etherlab.org/ethercat

I downloaded and installed the microSD image you provided a link for above. M RPi 4 booted up and asked for a password. I've tried "raspberry", "password", "linuxcnc" and several other guesses but nothing works so far. And I don't know how to change it since it boots right into the gui.

But what is the link from which you took it?

Some of the images out there are a single user called "root" with no password.
Which isn't ideal, but I think is a reaction to the existence of several million RPis on the net with a user of Pi and password "Raspberry". I am not clear on how passwordless root is better, though.

For the record, today I have started to build a Bookworm based linuxcnc installer in a chroot/cross compiler environment using this repository.
github.com/pyavitz/rpi-img-builder
I hit some unexpected errors and have got some amazing support after I logged an issue there.
Building the preempt_RT kernel seems to work. Once I get that done and tested, I'll be building Linuxcnc from the latest source in the chroot environment..
I might add that my choice of a user name of cnc and a password of cnc is not much better than a blank root password!
I hope it will be together in a week or so.
Maybe the new linuxcnc Buildbot can be taught how to run this as some RpI Debs are sorely needed.

This image should boot into a Bookworm 64 bit PREEMPT_RT kernel but it does not have linuxcnc on it yet.
drive.google.com/file/d/1H1D6vxyL0cqbkYu..._kp/view?usp=sharing
If any body wants to give it ago as I won't get a chance until tomorrow
Just burn it using the PI imager as normal and boot.
Any early feedback would be appreciated. Next step is to install linuxcnc from source on this image, record the dependencies etc and build it into the installer.
This video I did shows you how to build linuxcnc if you really want to get carried away (assuming it boots!)
EDIT: Forgot
User = cnc
Password = cnc
No root account
