This is a random error. I have many other files that are not working. At the moment I am solving the problem by moving them to the root of the machine configuration folder.

Samba was the next thing I was going to address.
Simple sharing by using the file manager no root intervention required .
Tho if you need file sharing from Linux to Linux NFS is a far far better solution.

Linuxcnc & the Raspberry Pi (4 & 5) Official Images Only!!!

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

I couldn't get wpa_supplicant to work at my site. Being the lazy ass I am I found it easier to just edit the interfaces file.
Then working out I was even more lazier, and I like to enable and disable wifi on the fly, I installed network-manager-gnome.
To be honest I'm thinking that building an update image for the RPi 5 with network-manager might be worth it. If users want to use the gpio driver they'll have to disable it
Why didn't someone read the info with the download ?
1: people are lazy
2: people don't pay attention they just want the instant reward
3: they just download from a link.

I put up a link to the Debian way of setting up networking, but I don't think people read this thread or read a thread from the beginning.

"Newer" Lenovo Tinys with Parallel Port?

Parallel port is perfectly usable.
You may find you will you need an RTAI kernel.
Tuning for a machine that has to run a base and servo thread is a bit harder than one that just requires a servo thread.

"Newer" Lenovo Tinys with Parallel Port?

Category: Computers and Hardware

Hi All,
While I just received some lovely Mesa boards for my mill project which will run on an older, seconhand Lenovo Tiny with a likewise secondhand touchscreen, I am thinking ahead here for a cheaper way to run Lcnc on a small lathe.

I am based in Asia and can tap into the Chinese used market easier, faster and way cheaper than I can source new or used from US/Eu and I also do need to do the next project a bit cheaper.

I just realized that quite a lot of the 2017 onwards Tinys have full PCIe slots which via a cheap riser should be able to accept regular PCIe expansions boards like parallel port ones.
So, for the small lathe project which wont need many IOs and just 2 axis, I was thinking of going old school with parallel port and one of those cheap 5-axis parallel boards from China. Granted, a Tiny with PCIe will be slightly more expensive than my older one without PCIe but not by much. And the riser adapter and extensions can be had for just a few bucks, too. At the end of the day, maybe I wont actually save more than 100-150 bucks or so but I am willing to give it a go.

Now, the simple/stupid question: Parallel port is still cool for Lcnc, right? I wont lose out on any software functionality other than having a much less swank, feature rich and well built board like a Mesa and having to use a different configuration tool? But once setup, I can expect it to run the same as on a Mesa?

Here's that 5 axis Par board I mentioned (less than USD 3):

Oh, before you say RPI 5 can do Par Port too and there's even a hat to interface it to this exact 5 axis board, I think I'd prefer to stick to a Lenovo Tiny. The latter wouldn't even cost much more and I could keep a copy of Windows on it for when/if I need to tune servos and such.

@rodw, I haven't checked recently, but the iso had an old qtpyvcp source listed that causes some issues and requires removed to resolve. We updated the instructions to use the lockdown deb on the forum page as it doesn't have the outdated source.

People who follow random methods to install Linuxcnc are bound to  end up with issues sooner or later as things change
Install using the image on the downloads page and install probe basic etc from repositories
This will mean you get better support as people like Lcvette will be dealing with a known environment.

Why didn't you follow the instructions on the Downloads page to setup wireless networking and simply type:
sudo menu-config ?

Re a fixed IP wired connection for Mesa Ethernet card, follow the directions in the man page for hm2_eth (type man hm2_eth) or follow this link.
linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man9/hm2_eth.9.html
If you are using a wired connection for internet, there should be nothing to set up as it will get an IP address from your router automatically using DHCP.

This is what I found: linux-image-6.1.0-30-rt-amd64
Linux 6.1 for 64-bit PCs, PREEMPT_RT (signed)

I clicked on mark for reinstallation and then clicked apply.
It came back with:
E: Internal Error, No file name for linux-image-6.1.0-30-rt-amd64:amd64

Linuxcnc & the Raspberry Pi (4 & 5) Official Images Only!!!

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Hi,

Still in regard to the image linuxcnc.org/iso/rpi-4-debian-bookworm-6...25-01-27-0404.img.xz, I have found the following information useful:

1. The desktop is XFCE, we can find out using the command echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP.

2. In regard to enabling Wifi.

This image comes with no network manager tool, nmcli is not available.

ChatGPT suggests the following steps. And I have carried them out successfully.

Please note, I had to switch to superuser to run the below commands.

To switch to superuser, use sudo su -.

a. Connect Using wpa_supplicant (If No NetworkManager).

b. Generate a configuration file:

[
wpa_passphrase "<WIFI_NETWORK_NAME>" "<WIFI_PASSWORD>" | sudo tee /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
]

c. Start wpa_supplicant:

[
wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
]

Please note, wlan0. I think this is called network device name. We can find it out using the command ip link show, there are several output entries, I just guessed which on is the Wifi one, and lucky it was correct :)

d. Obtain an IP address via DHCP:

[
dhclient wlan0
]

e. Persist WiFi Connection (For Boot Time). Ensure it's enabled at boot:

[
systemctl enable wpa_supplicant
systemctl start wpa_supplicant
]

f. Test connectivity:

[
ping -c 4 8.8.8.8
]

It should give successful responses.

g. I restarted the machine. And still have Wifi, but there is no Wifi icon. I have not been able to get it to display.

3. In regard to Remote Desktop Connection.

I followed this article phoenixnap.com/kb/debian-remote-desktop and get it to work successfully.

Connecting from my Windows 10, the desktop just displays rubbish. It is not usuable.

4. In regard to directory sharing.

Samba works successfully, just like in Ubuntu and Raspbian. The setting up process is pretty much the same.

Thank you and best regards,

...behai.

What are the dependency names?

Is it the 4 listed at the end?:
linux-image-6.1.0-30-rt-amd64
linux-image-6.1.0-30-amd64
linux-image-amd64
linux-image-rt-amd64

I tried
chris@PM-833TV:~$ sudo apt install linux-image-6.1.0-30-rt-amd64

It came back with the same error and those 4 listed.
