No motion LinuxCNC Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO, same config works on 2.8

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I've got a 3 axis mill that is running Linux 2.8 on a 32-bit Debian install using a Mesa 6i25 / 7i76 combo.

I've installed LinuxCNC 2.9.4 on a new hard drive from the LinuxCNC Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO and have copied the config files from the 2.8 install.  LinuxCNC 2.9 starts using those config files without any issue and I've got comms with the Mesa cards but I can't move any of the axes (this also means I can't home the machine so anything that requires homing can't be done/tested).

It's probably something fairly simple perhaps with some config requirement change from 2.8 to 2.9 but I've read the documentation and nothing noted in there applies to my setup.

Any ideas on how I can go about diagnosing this issue?  I've made no hardware changes to the machine and swapping the 2.8 hard drive back in has everything working properly.

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I have a 7i85 and I've been using this firmware (without using pwm) for quite a while. The three encoders are on the 7i85. Not certain how it worked but it did.

I would appreciate a new version with PWM when you get the time. (I do need the index-enable for this config.)
I use 7i92 PWM for my router laser so I should be ok if the pin gets exposed.

@ elovalvo Thanks for your work on this. I am trying to stay within RPI OS and compiling my own kernel. Can you tell me why I still have to patch the kernel, even though RT_PREEMPT is supposed to be a part of the mainstream kernel now? I am using the latest 6.6.74.

Probe Basic V.5 - kein Feedregler mehr? Solved

Category: Deutsch

Wisst Ihr vielleicht etwas dazu?

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

First, it Looks like that configuration is for a 7I85S rather than 7I85
and second it look like custom firmware that has a mistake
(a PWM module instantiated but no pins brought out)

A configuration including a PWMgen should have a P in the name
I can make a proper configuration in a day or so if you wish

Do you have a 7I85 or 7I85S?

Onshape CAM Studio was announced last Friday with basic 2-1/2D and 3D available now and more advanced 3D to 5th axis available in the future with an additional paid fee.

Standard CAM Studio is free for those on the Professional or higher tiers, so you'll need to fork over $2,500 per year to get access to it. Enterprise Educational users may get access to it after some period of time. Or not.

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I'm running a 7i96 with a 7i85 for my lathe(steppers and linear encoders) using 7i96_7i85ssdid.bit I have been using LCNC pwmgen and I'd like to switch to the Mesa pwmgen before I spend time tuning the spindle VFD pid further. (I use the stepgen.00.index-enable pin for homing)

I loadrt [HM2](DRIVER) board_ip=[HM2](ADDRESS) config="num_encoders=3 num_pwmgens=1 num_stepgens=4 sserial_port_0=00xxxx" I'm using TB3 ENC 0, ENC 1, ENC2 on the 7i85 and TB1 STEP 0, STEP 1, STEP 2, STEP 3 on the 7i96.This all works with the LCNC pwmgen driving ssr.00.out-02.

I added the mesa pwmgen and I can run the mesa pwmgen in parallel but I can't find the pwmgen signal coming out the Mesa board.
I was expecting to see the PWM output on the TB2 STEP4 (TB2-02, TP2-03) connector but I do not see a PWM gen signal?

7i96_7i85ssdid.pin from readhmid reports there is a PWM module in the firmware (and I can see the pwmgen pins in HALMeter and HALShow) but I can't figure out the pwm signal connector?

LCNCpins.txt doesn't show the PWM assignment either?

LatheSpindle.hal has my relevant HAL connections.

Any help would be appreciated.

Installing NoMachine Remote Desktop - Package installer issues

Category: Computers and Hardware

It seems like you made a typo, try to go first to the directory:
cd ~/Downloads
and then enter:
sudo apt install ./nomachine and press TAB so it will complete it automatically to nomachine_8.16.1_1_amd64.deb and press enter

Or just open the folder in the window manager and dubbel click the file

I'm using Sunshine as host on the LinuxCNC PC and Moonlight-qt as client, this works pretty well.
github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine/releases
github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt/releases/tag/v6.1.0

On the Windows PC I use WinSCP to easily transfer files

Installing NoMachine Remote Desktop - Package installer issues

Category: Computers and Hardware

they seem to think it could be an issue with the package installer on the machine itself. I tried to follow prompts to install the .deb on command line but didnt seem to have access to the directory.
james@CNCPC:~$ sudo dpkg -i /home/james/Downloads/nomachine_8.16.1_1_amd64.deb dpkg: error: cannot access archive ‘/home/james/Downloads/nomachine_8.16.1_1_amd64.deb’: No such file or directory

I'm definitely open to alternatives that will work. I just want to make sure that I wont run into the same issue when trying to install that one. Is there a any small thing i can download (minesweeper or snake maybe) that i make sure i can actually install things?

As for spammers, they do damage, actual damage, as clicking on some of those links will literally grant them full access to your PC and everything on your network, yes even cameras, followed by misusing whatever info they got out of your systems and then some will add extortion to that threatening with making that info public. Or completely locking you out of everything, and extorting you to get your own stuff back.

Good point.

Fanuc servo motor and servo drive retrofit with linuxcnc and mesa card

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

It might be possible depending on the exact servo drive model
Some FANUC drive of that vintage are Analog +-10V controlled

Can you find the actual drive model?

Fanuc servo motor and servo drive retrofit with linuxcnc and mesa card

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Hello, i buyed a Seiki Mori MV40B machine(year1989) that has fanuc controller and servo motors(lost prgogram because of battery). i attach pictures from cabinet and motor plate. I'm trying to retrofit with linuxcnc and mesa boards. Anyone that could give advice about this, i need to change de driver? (fanuc says it's servo amplifier) i can controll with mesa board? There is a lot of information about the posibility of controlling axis with mesa board, spindle with some change of the spindle encoder.... but i haven't find something that is suitable for me.I want to keep de servo motors if possible (because of the cost of new one) and make adaptations to make small costing retrofit, but if is not possible, i want to know if there is o solution for retrofiting with smallest cost .

Homemade CNC Plasma - hypertherm, Mesa, gear drives, nema 34.

Category: Show Your Stuff

The approximately +- 15000 encoder velocity numbers in the video
seem like pure noise. (and negative values should not even be possible)

I would first try jumpering the 'B' input as single ended and see if that helps
(also make sure nothing is wired to either 'B' input)

Do you get steady arc voltage readings when the plasma supply is off?
