If you want just one stepgen/encoder index on the 7I96s's built in encoder
interface, use 7i96s_esdi1.bin. If you need more, it depends on where
you want the index pins to connect. The 7i96sd_esdid.bin firmware
puts 3 stepgen index pins on the 7I96S encoder A,B,IDX inputs
(losing the encoder)

Hi...that is what I did....no internet connection at the time skipped mirror...not sure if that is problem..the reason that i wanted to use it is that I am at pncconf trying to add a couple axis through p1 expansion...i am not sure which function to use and the how to designate step/dir for these additional axis?

It is possible to have a custom dialog. I haven't done one for tool dialog but see no particular problem. It would, as you suspected, require a custom handler file.

But I don't think it ill help you. The dialog blocks because linuxcnc is blocked. Unblocking the dialog will not unblock linuxcnc.

You can not call MDI commands at tool change unless it's incorporated into a remap.

Any Gantry components have been made onsolete 2 versions ago with v2.8. Please read homing configuration as the gantry set up is all to do with homing.

So I am at p1 tab in mesa 7i96s trying to set up 2 additional axis ...I think I get pin assignments but not clear which function to use...looks like x BLDC control but not sure what hall vs gray are? Am i in the right place?

How did you install linuxcnc? What linux version did you install? Looks like You are not running Debian 12. Python 3 is included in Debian 12
I would recommend you use the image on the Linuxcnc downloads page

i order the 7i97t an two 7i84   i found out i need  about  50 DI and  30 DO
would it bother you to share with me your hall and ini file with a word (preferably a lot) of explanation on how you got that done ? 
I am also interested is how you made the wiring to the drivers and from the shaft encoders  
I have a very little experience with a 7i76 card for a basic 3-axis controller but so far no experience at all to get for example the tool change in the hall file  
there is also a gearbox with 2 gears  
if I could have an example I should be able to adapt it to my application

in the meantime
i tried to understand what went wrong and i found the reason,

i skipped a step in menuconfig

 

with that step the compilation of the RT kernel was successful
the latency is now very ok

 


 


unlike the installation of the EtherCAT packages that gives me an error


 

i don't know what it depends on, maybe we need to wait for Etherlab to update the repositories


 

At minimum, you need to change the sign of the encoder scale
 

spindle-vel-cmd-rps is positive but spindle-vel-fb-rps is negative.
Should I use spindle-vel-fb-rps-abs???
So it seems that the comparison is destined to fail at the moment,
there is some (significant) difference in the value of the commanded vs reported speed.
If I can get it compare positive to positive maybe I can figure out the correct scale.

Where I'm struggling is with the widgets - managed to get a label and led onto a fixed window - but I can't figure out how to move them. They seem to only resize

All normal 7I96S firmware supports index on the encoder.
Did you mean stepgen index support?
