Suggestion for a PCI EPP card for 7i43 was created by juliankoenig87

Suggestion for a PCI EPP card for 7i43

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Hi.

I do have a 7i43 laying around and want to use it with a thinkcenter p90 (good latency) without a parallel port.

So is there a good choice for a current pci to epp card?
The suggested ones are hard to get nowadays.

Best regards
Julian

Installing LinuxCNC 2.9 on Raspberry Pi 4B with Preempt-RT kernel

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

First of all, my deepest deepest sympathies, sorry to hear you live in Melbourne, the only good thing Victoria has to other is Philip Island and the roads, airports and docks that lead out of the state.

Why aren't you using the premade image for your RPi ?

The links are on the Linuxcnc home page under downloads.

Good evening cornholio,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.

I love Melbourne, except the crazy weather :) I have spent more than 2/3 of my life in Melbourne.

So after about 6 failed attempts ha ha ha... I found this official instructions: The Linux kernel

And I used one of the 64 bit images offered by the Raspberry Pi imager software to get my initial OS with Desktop.

Then from the instructions above, I picked out the appropriate bits to apply.

I finally succeeded:

Then, I also use a Windows utility named "Win32 Disk Imager - 1.0" to take an image of the SD card. And restore the image to another new card, I am able to boot from this new card also. Now I have an entire back up of the original card, if both cards fail at the same time, I am still covered.

Originally, I used the native dd tool to do the image backup, I could restore the image also, but it refuses to boot.

Currently, I only have a "Nema 23 Closed Loop Stepper Motor 3Nm (424.83oz.in)" and the CL57T-V41 driver.

I am learning by trying to program it using Python... I am having trouble getting it to work properly as a closed loop motor. I can get it to work as an open loop motor, we just switch on the the 6th dip switch SW6.

Thank you and best regards,

...behai.

what about the availability? i haven't been active here for a long time. 2 years ago the 7i76e was not available, currently it is not available either. did it ever come back? or should i better use another card? i already have some 7i76s in use and would like to use the same hardware on all machines...

i use this sensor to check the compressor pressure,
but you need an analog input for that:

I would not expect the input step frequency of the driver (ie the 250kHz) to depend on the microstep or the output current setting.

Max RPM for given torque and micro stepping will depend on many variables (driver-, motor-, load-characteristics) and generally I would be rather weary of specs I'm given for cheap motors and drivers to begin with.

[edit]
I presume you are aware of the rather terrible speed/torque characteristics of a stepper motor. You might want to ask the supplier of your particular motor for a chart. Also max RPM will depend highly on the voltage you run your motors at.

Another question: I am running the tang 9k with ethernet. What happens if the ethernet connections drops during a move. Will the motors just stop?

yes, if the connection is broken, all systems goes into eStop, enable pins goes low and no steps will generated anymore

Looks like you are loading 'lathe.hal' and there is a conflict with a component that was already added in another hal file.

Copy/pasting entire hal and ini files between configs is rarely a good idea. I would suggest you only copy/paste lines you really need.

5-DRV8825 Questions

Category: Configuration Tools

For my application I need to drive a stepper motor at 60RPM with 2.5Nm of torque. I have chosen a stepper motor with a maximum allowable torque of 3Nm and a current rating of 0.6A per phase. The stepper motor is aNEMA 16 stepper motor with a 14:1 planetary gearbox so the step angle is 0.131 degrees.

My question is how do I calculate at what RPM the 5-DRV8825 stepper motor driver can drive the stepper motor?

I have read the TI datasheet for the 5-DRV8825 and it says the maximum step frequency is 250kHz, which I am assuming is for the highest microstepping resolution of 1/32 and a maximum driver output current of 2.5A.

Is there a reference table or simple formula that I can use to determine the maximum step frequency at lower microstepping resolutions and lower driver output currents?

Is the relationship between microstepping and torque linear? From what I understand, microstepping reduces torque?[/url]

hm2/hm2_7i92.0: Error finishing read!

Usually it is Joint 2, sometimes joint 1 or joint 0. I have to shut down the 7i72 card and restart linuxcnc.
The error is running a program, but sometimes I have gotten the error Error finishing read on 7i92 with no movement of the motors. What could this be due to?
I have a Mesa 7i72 board with a 7i76 connected to an orange PI5, The network cable is Cat6, the motors are Chinese servomotors connected as a direction step, I have executed several times the command:

sudo chrt 99 ping -i .001 -q 192.168.1.1 -c 50000

To see if packets are lost and the result is always 0% packets lost.

I have lowered the maximum speed of the engines in the ini file, I don't know what can happen. Any idea?

Aciera,
I see this only happen with lichuan-stepper (CL3-E57H). The same setup can do drive-homing for lichuan-servo (LC20E).

/usr/share/linuxcnc/hallib/lathe.hal error

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I created 1 config with pfconfig. no issues with this one. then i used pfconfig to create a second one and copy the same ini and hal files into the second config and im getting a /usr/share/linuxcnc/hallib/lathe.hal error addf failed / servo-thread not found. they should both be identical so im not sure why one would work but not the second one? im trying to create 2 different configs for the same machine. one with axis and one with probe basic.

anyone have any thoughts?

LinuxCNC-RIO - RealtimeIO for LinuxCNC based on FPGA (ICE40 / ECP5)

Category: Computers and Hardware

Heureka!! The new level shifter came in today and it works! I used the 3.3V to 12V and supplied 5V to the high voltage line. Even that works. On the Oscilloscope the Input side looks like a perfect square wave, the output side has a raising edge which is not super vertical. It looks like to doesn't make an issue. Will test the 3.3V to 5V lever shifter and see if that makes a difference.

What is the expected behavior of the direction signal. I was expecting that it's either permanently high or permanently low depending on the direction. It looks like that it's either permanent low and high only when a step impulse is created. Meaning it is kind of a square signal too. Is that correct?

Another question: I am running the tang 9k with ethernet. What happens if the ethernet connections drops during a move. Will the motors just stop?
