I'll leave others confuse you about the power connection.

So back to your diode. It might be easier to use discrete components so you can just wire in to the solenoid terminals directly but if you must, from your diode block, pin 2 would be connected to the red wire where it attaches to the solenoid and pin 1 would attach to the other solenoid terminal (black wire).

If you used a discrete diode, you would just bridge the solenoid connectors using the diode with the solid band pointing back towards the output.

Did it look out of whack to you? I have been looking back and forth between Norbert's drawing and mine and it looks the same. I feel like I'm tripping.

Ok, so I am making this harder than it needs to be... I do that quite often. Would you mind posting a link or part number to exactly what you are referring to, 'discrete component'? Thx

Yup, that will do. Typically, the diodes most used are the IN4004 or IN4007 etc. The last digit I think sets the voltage tolerance but it does not really matter if its rated for 50 volts or 1000 volts. (My take anyway). A diode is like a one way check valve in plumbing

I had to use a magnifier, but these are 1N4007. How does this look?

Looks great, hope I got them the right way round. PCW will confirm If I stuff up to be sure.

From the manual:

Note: When W1 is in the default left hand position, VIN is connected to VFIELD, so only VFIELD need be supplied to the 7I76E to power its field IO.

VINpower runs the field I/O processor and normally is connected to field power. VIN must be greater than 8V for proper operation. This means VIN must come from a separate source if 5V field voltage is used

If W1 is in the left position, connection of TB1 Pin5 (VIN) to the same 24V supply is not _necessary_ since it is already connected.

Since I am sure a LOT of people have used Norbert's schematic it doesn't seem to cause much harm to do it that way though.

I'm sure my first machine is still wired that way.

Man, he released that just after I got my card wired up!
And the 7i76e was not supported by pncconf then so it was all manual building hal and ini.

Ha, so I take it you didn't do the unnecessary connection to VIN then. There are some advantages to not having a schematic one can follow blindly.

VIN should not be used as it can be disconnected with the jumper, use the 8-32V pins on TB1 for powering the board.
