That is old, so most of the issues are due to very limited RAM memory.
As for the parallel port, just have a look on the back side, there should be a female DB25 connector, violet colour, it is the biggest connector on the back.

Yes , there was one card and I added another, neither of which were violet in colour. I think I will look for a replacement either new or from ebay. I have noted a thread on this topic and will now read through it. I did increase RAM but will find out to what.

Back again. I now have a HP 500B MT desktop. My first problem came as it only had one port able to take the parallel port card and this was occupied by an Ethernet card even although there was an onboard Ethernet connection. After much trial and error freed up the port and internet now connected to onboard. Parallel port card now fitted and if enter lspci --vv the card appears with port reference. I change the reference in the tester but port is not found when attempting to run.

Screen shot

03:04.0 Parallel controller: Device 1c00:2170 (rev 0f) (prog-if 01 [BiDir])
Subsystem: Device 1c00:2170

Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 10
Region 0: I/O ports at ec00
Region 1: I/O ports at e880

hamish@debian:~/Downloads$ halrun -I -f ptest.hal
Note: Using POSIX realtime
config string '0xec00 out'
Linux parallel port @60416 not found

I am sure it must be simple but any advise would be appreciated.
