thanks

I'm stuck now anyway. I ordered some "precision collet reducers" and one wound up with 0.0028" runout, and the other was 6.32mm instead of 6mm.

That's worse than even the most garbage $1 aliexpress collet reducer.

Sigh. now I need to figure out something else and likely wait weeks for it to arrive...

Whilst mesa and ethercat might coexist as they NIC they use are defined for each environment, the question is why do that?
Ethercat can do everything a mesa card can do and then some.

Um, cause the machine is already running on the mesa and i just want to add one motor? :)

Not sure why you guys think a stepper would somehow be better than a servo? a nema 17 stepper has less torque than a 100w servo. I dont think inertia would be an issue on such a tiny magazine (only 120mm diam). it will only be moving about 100rpm with quite low acceleration.

I buy stuff from CTC tools ex Hong Kong who don't sell garbage. Last buy was ER20 collets. If they don't have a listing they might source it for you.
As far as shipping, I have had stuff arrive from them in the same time as stuff ordered from interstate in Australia

k, running my tool mag properties through yaskawas calculator to figure out inertia. you do quickly get out of range, but the 40mm 50w will be fine as long as i take some time accelerating. 1-2 seconds to get up to speed.

This doesnt need to be high performance, just for function testing.

Thanks. they don't have them. they are pretty impossible to find. I got these ones form amana tool, which I had thought would be reputable, but nope.

(for the record, anything worse then 0.0005" would be unacceptable here)

Understood.  Earlier post was just a mild warning, not a hard THOU SHALT NOT sort of thing.

And if you don't feel like fiddling with ethercat, maybe plug in a 7i85s to get another bucket of S&D outputs for the ATC motor?  Assuming you've got a spare port, of course.
