-177.0000 and counting up

No axes move

Remember -177. -178, -179... is counting down not up.

Can you try just a G76 command in MDI (cutting air).
It is entirely possible that the sample G-code hasn't even got to the G76 line.

Did try the G76 line 102 from the sample file but nothing other than error joint 0 exceeding limit

Well that makes me wonder if all settings are correct.

M3 rotates OK but counts negative and M4 positive

If the spindle counts down in M3 mode then you need to make the spindle encoder scale negative.

(Assuming a front-toolpost lathe)

And were the start and end points inside the machine limits?

(I think you might have got lucky not to be ramming the tool straight in to the chuck there)

How do I do TOOL TOUCH-OFF with a single line in MDI?

Well thank you so very much for your help as usual much appreciated.
The error was encoder scale polarity.

Best Xmas present ever with your help guys. Now that I have the basics running I can get more work done.

Cheers
Bengt

Yes, that seems to be working.
If you have any spare candles you can try threading those. (tool crashes into candles don't matter)
