Think I will try latest ISO with Debian10.

That's the route I took after a lot of problems. I switched soon to the buildbot version and only have self made problems now.
Gmoccapy is very current if you use the buildbot.

There are certain problems with Debian 10 (Buster), you will have no problem getting mvp to work I think.

What touchscreen do you have? I have now a 23" Hanns-g and started out with a 17" General touch . Both work pretty good, the Hanns-g is more modern and worked straight out of the box and is controllable with the Debian touch screen software.

Do not make it to hard for yourself. Boot from the LinuxCNC iso, use a SSD that can be overwritten and choose the install option.

Mint-apt vs Debian-apt

forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=147...4f003c1af28#p1470794
Mint still has two versions of apt - the Debian apt (usr/bin/apt) and a Mint apt python wrapper (usr/local/bin/apt). Unless you've messed with your $PATH or uninstalled the package mintsystem (which provides the mint apt) the latter has precedence when simply using apt in the terminal. To specifically run debian apt you need to use /usr/bin/apt in Mint.

Compare the output of

apt -h (Mint's apt python wrapper)

to

/usr/bin/apt -h (Debian apt)

Mint's apt brings various package management commands into one command. Under the hood it is still running the original commands.

e.g You can use apt showhold which actually runs apt-mark showhold or apt deb which actually runs sudo dpkg -i and asks you nicely for your password.

Similarly if you apt install it actually runs sudo /usr/bin/apt install and asks you nicely for your password..... :D

It's not clear to me what instructions you are following and what you want to achieve.
All I know is you will go deep into the rabbit hole and will be frustrated. I know, I have been there.

I remember when I upgraded I ran dist-upgrade in stead of upgrade. This solved all the missing dependencies for me.

I have been using Debian for years, all my servers and even pc's use Debian. I am glad that I made the switch years ago.

I hope you can still use your machine now, even after all the problems. My advice is to order one or two SSD's, they are very cheap now. Use the LinuxCNC ISO and install onto the SSD. That way you have a decent version of operating system and you are supported by LinuxCNC in the future.
I read that Norbert is doing stuff with gmoccapy to make it even better. So maybe a little wait for the release of new gmoccapy?

This what I am following now (the Mint 20 has no Preempt-RT) so I have to start once again.

The SSD has to wait as I am not made of money, I am on pension ;)

Install Linux Mint 19.3
-Copy and paste these lines in terminal, one by one:
-
sudo apt update
-
wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-4.9.0-13-rt-amd64_4.9.228-1_amd64.deb
-
sudo gdebi linux-image-4.9.0-13-rt-amd64_4.9.228-1_amd64.deb
-
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net:80 --recv-key EF1B07FEE0EE663E
-
-For Master version, unstable, still under development
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ stretch master-rtpreempt'
-OR, not both.
-For 2.8 version, stable, to be current release
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ stretch 2.8-rtpreempt'
-
sudo apt-get update
-
sudo apt-get -y install linuxcnc-uspace
