Linuxcnc & the Raspberry Pi (4 & 5) Official Images Only!!!

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Regarding Network Manager
sudo apt install network-manager-gnome

This will install the panel applet and network-manager making managed networking easier to setup.

For a description on networking the debian way.

LinuxCNC on Raspberry Pi 5

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of the std xfce panel setup, but that's easy enough to change.
Actually I prefer MATE and have made images for myself with the MATE desktop without any of the XFCE4 hangover, but it is simple enough to install MATE on the std linuxcnc image, whether amd64 or arm64.

With regards to wifi & networking in general.
sudo apt install network-manager-gnome
installs network manager & the gnome applet. The reason this has been left out is because there were some latency issues, I think with the 12.x series being far better this is not such an issue.
I like the gnome applet as I like to turn wifi off when running Linuxcnc.

If a touch screen enumerates as HID it will just work. As the images we build use the RPi-Linux sources it may be a kernel module that isn't included in our build to support non HID touchscreens.
On screen keyboard, just a package we don't include.
Reasons for not using RPIOS, the fact that it uses wayland as a default and X compatibility layer is very slow, so slow that there is a significant difference when running latency tests between wayland (as stock) and changing to X.
Branding is also an issue, something I really want to deal with. Debian isn't so restrictive, hence the reason the PC images changed from Ubuntu to Debian.

There is also a thread some where on the forum regarding Linuxcnc on RPIOS. The topic author slips my mind at this moment.

Remora - ethernet NVEM / EC300 / EC500 cnc board

Category: Computers and Hardware

I think I'm not far from the goal?
Does anyone have a config file for functional linuxcnc 3 axes?

refer to the remora documents, and the github repo

I'm going to replace the BOB and convert it to the EC500. Will Remora firmware work with the probe basic gui?

you can use whatever linuxcnc gui you choose

Configure a non-motorized axis with a linear scale (DRO mode) - Solved

Category: Advanced Configuration

I was thinking about this, trying to think of a general process.
Thinking out loud:
What you are asking for is similar to coupling axes on DROs.
In your case it seems Z (linuxcnc controlled?) axis is the bed and your manual one is the quill.

This is quite a common machine layout.

I feel like using an linuxcnc's extra joint for the manual quill would be appropriate.
This would display the extra joint position in the GUI.
Then tell the GUI to couple the joints for Z for touch off.
maybe the GUI could be set up to show the extra joint position naked when 'uncoupled' and combined when 'coupled'.
Not that far from what you are doing anyways, just feels a little more official/
AXIS sim has a sample config to show extra joints so you could see the idea with the DRO display.

Thoughts?

g33.1 problem

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Good morning. I wanted to ask for clarifications on a problem that I encounter both on a real machine and on sim/axis. The version is 2.9 pre0.
If I command m3 s800 and after g33.1 z-50 k1, the tapping is performed correctly, the spindle turns in m3, stops with deceleration after z-50 and returns to m4 until it exceeds the initial z in deceleration, and then returns to the initial z.

If I command m3 s1000 and after g33.1 z-50 k1, the tapping is not performed correctly, the spindle turns in m3, the z reaches -50 and no longer returns to z +, I send back with the spindle rotating.

If I command m3 s2000 and after g33.1 z-50 k2 the tapping is performed correctly, the spindle turns in m3, stops with deceleration after z-50 and returns to m4 until it exceeds the initial z in deceleration, and then returns to the initial z.

If I command m3 s3000 and after g33.1 z-50 k2, the tapping is not performed correctly, the spindle turns in m3, the z reaches -50 and does not return to z +, I return with the spindle rotating.

This value the spindle are on real machine, on sim have value for spindle velocity much hight, but problem is the same .
on linuxcnc 2.9.0 pre0 is the same at 2.10.0-pre0

On fanuc system, the spindle have 2 acceleration value.
One for velocity mode, when work in m3 or m4 and the second accelleration for tapping.

i have test change encoder resolution and mesa card , but the problem not is hw.
some test:
if change acceleration the spindle and is much fast , the m3s1500 is ok.
The acceleration value the spindle change reaction on return the z axis .

because ?

I happen to like the RPIOS default desktop (LXDE-PI) way better than LinuxCNCs (XFCE or whatever it is) and a host of other reasons, including the Raspis built in touchscreen support and on-screen keyboard. Everything, including wi-fi, just seems to work. Its easy to install LinuxCNC on it. If anyone is interested, I'll start a new thread.

You would need to add an external resistor from 3.3V to each input (0 through 7)
connected to a switch, assuming the switch switches to ground (a 4.7K resistor is a reasonable value)

If the switch/button has NO and NC contacts you can do without the resistor, but a normal
SPST switch needs the resistors.

All of the wiring is correct.

I noticed that the led indicator turns on when i power on the machine but when i start the program it turns off. I try to unplug power to the driver while the machines is on and replace it and that turns the led back on. Seems like a faulty driver yeah?

@Coyote no I didn't have any role here. This is all Grotius' genius on display. I got buried under school responsibilities and managing now two businesses so I haven't been too active in machining over the last year

@ihavenofish this is beyond dad joke into grandpa joke territory

@Grotius I have tested the scurve on my machine for motion (although I haven't tested probing/toolsetting/cutting). I somehow managed to destroy a spindle bearing a while back and turn it into a spindle bushing, and I just got a new spindle earlier this week - I should have time to install the  VFD into the electronics cabinet next week and set up the new spindle, and will send some videos of cutting differences once that's done.

Actually the A/B inputs are inverted (which is what you want for an active low home switch input)
But the index input is not inverted.

options:

1. If you have more spare encoder inputs, just use A,B

2. Add 1 or  more  "not" components to invert the polarity of the input-index pin

Hi.
So, I tested the scurve with my loop machine for over 18 hourse. No crashes. And I really try to torture it with extreme values. I would call it a sucess and really good coding by Grotius. Well done.

I will go on and do some tests and thinking of backlash compensation this weekend. Have some thoughts but have to figure it out first.

Z Homing

Category: Basic Configuration

I've tried a bunch of more things.

I noticed it could possibly be a wiring issue but that just flipped the directions so you'll notice that the scale now has a different sign. I thought maybe i was getting confused by the min/max and it largely operating in the negative domain so I just changed it to operate from 0 ->4 and the max is 4.

I also messed around with the 'home offset' alot. trying 0, 0.1, -0.1, 3.9, -3.9 and no dice, so its now at 0.The last thing i changed was 'home' in the section above as a last ditch effort. I changed it to 4. The logic is when it hits the switch it considers max that it should do its final approach thing, back off then consider that home and set the DRO to 4. This isn't what happens.

I noticed that when Z is homing, as soon as it hits the switch the DRO changes to zero and not 4. This is the opposite of what we'd expect but clear I've fat fingered something. Attached is the latest .hal and .ini .

side note: these motors give a lot of vibration and noise at slow speeds but it seems really nice and smooth at higher speeds (over 28 in/min) I'm not homing at these speeds but i don't know if this is just resonance and rattling as i still haven't anchored the machine yet or maybe settings i could look into.
