I think this post needs to be updated to 2.9.3 to match the website? Also I can't find sha256sum anywhere for the .iso. Fwiw, I get the following:

Use alcohol to clean the pins on the 5i25 card and inside the PC slot, use an old cotton t-shirt for the first and an old tooth brush for the second, leave to dry for an hour or use compressed air to dry faster, then plug in.
Also use a voltmeter and measure on the main 20 or 24 pin mainboard connector between any of the black wires and an orange wire, it should be 3.3V, anything lower than 3.1 will probably not work, PCW knows this best.

Z axis is in the rapid servo positioner box, aka the old THC, so that would need replacing, a cheap stepper drive and motor should do just fine.

Help to understand axes directions

Edit:
Homing should be
Z ok
X oposite
Y oposite
Although with LinuxCNC you can make it home anyway you like and still have 0 at the bottom left side.

Help to understand axes directions

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Hello Mates,
i'm having trouble understanding the proper axes directions between machine vs tool directions.
This is the first CNC I'm commissioning.

When the table is moving to the left, closer to the lathe the X should increment?
When the machine is moving toward the light blue wall the Y should increment?
When the table is moving down, closer to the floor, the Z should increment?

I'm setting my home positions and to order to:
1st: Z all the way down, nearest to the floor at value 0.0
2nd: X all the way to the left, nearest the lathe at value 0.0
3rd: Y all the way back, nearest to the wall at value 0.0

Greetings!

How to add a PCI card paralell and serial ports to an ASUS pc for debian linuxc

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I installed a PCI serial/parallel port card in an old ASUS pc to run CNC linux, latest debian version.
The computer did not have a native parallel port.
The program does not find the new pci parallel port.  How may I troubleshoot that?
Or can someone recommend a parallel port card that does work?
Thanks very much.

I think that one of the 3 drives is for the slave axis on the Y. I don't know where the Z drive is hiding I'm assuming in the RSVP box or in the controller I included a photo of below. Do you think it's still worth it to reuse the motors and drives? I also included a photo of today's work on the machine I got it all stripped down. It still is a heavy gantry I have yet to weigh it to size motors but I Would guess when all put backtogerher 500+ lbs.

Thanks for the quick response, looks like it's the 5i25 card. There were no LEDs on on the card, so I unplugged it and reseated it. The init and /Done leds flickered and went out. So I took it to another PC, same behavior,

Is there a problem that one probe is NC and the other is NO to connect to the same input (never both at the same time)?

In the case of probes, is it better for them to be NC or NO?

Yes it is as the change must also be reflected in HAL, so it would require having two of the same configs with and without the inverted input, very easy to do and use, but can not be used if both are to be used in the same run.
NO or NC does not matter much, but having both NC would make it possible to use the same input when wired in series.

First picture, the black servo positioning something or another is what we today call THC, and all that (but much faster) today fits in half a cigarette box! :) I would get rid of this so fast....
The attached picture with 4 boards, the left one is the power supply for the next 3, those 3 are the servo drives with lots of electronics, so i would really try to save this, do not worry about the broken encoder connectors, encoders should now be wired to Mesa board.
The box with PLC, i would also get rid of this, fast, all that is now done in software and through a Mesa board.
I would suggest getting a Mesa 7i96S with 7i85 and 7i83 and THCAD for now as this will be good for analog (existing drives) and new drives with analog or step/dir controls.
There are cheaper combos or single board solutions like Mesa 7i97T that everything for analog servos and encoder feedback, or 7i92TM with 7i77 that is the same things functionally.
For new dives with no feedback to LinuxCNC, 7i96S should be enough and you can add 7i85 for encoder feedback at any time later, or single board solution with encoder feedback = Mesa 7i95

Help with Denford Machine config

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

No need to upgrade at all, i have plenty of machines still using Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04 with LinuxCNC (was named EMC2 back then), but two things make the upgrade worth while:
-in case the hard drive dies, upgrade is a good idea, although old ISO can still be found
-if you also want that same PC on the internet, it is safer from a security standpoint
Personally, i would get a new hard drive since they are very cheap, install the new version from here
www.linuxcnc.org/iso/linuxcnc_2.9.3-amd64.hybrid.iso
and copy the config over, while leaving the old drive and config as a backup.
In the meantime, let's try to get things moving, should it be using metric or imperial?
If imperial, edit the existing ini file (after making a backup to a USB) where the TRAJ section is and change from
LINEAR_UNITS = mm
to
LINEAR_UNITS = inch
If it is metric, then all the entries for AXIS should be changed to say 10 for velocity and 250 for acceleration, and also the max limits should be reflecting the distance the actual machine can move, in mm.

Thanks for your response.

I currently have the probe touch with a gx16 connector outside the electronic box I understand that then Can I use a gx16 connector on the z probe and connect the one I want to use at all times?

Is there a problem that one probe is NC and the other is NO to connect to the same input (never both at the same time)?

In the case of probes, is it better for them to be NC or NO?

I want to upgrade to a 7i96s table card in the future but first I want to learn more about linuxcnc and cnc in general.
