The isolated input speed limit is mainly determined by the OPTOs,
Though you will likely need to set the inm module scan rate up above the
default 20 KHz.

You can use the expansion port GPIO pins but they are basically bare FPGA pins.
The GPIO have circuitry for 5V tolerance and will accept inputs
to +7V without damage but must be protected from negative spikes
that exceed the input protection diode current limits (10 ma).

Encoder signals tend to be noisy so I would add a say 220 ohm series
resistor to limit the maximum current of negative spikes.

There is no issue with applying 5V signals to the expansion connector
with 7I96S power off, as the bus-switch in series with the I/O pins
is disabled until the FPGA is powered and configured.

There is standard firmware that adds an additional INM module to the expansion
port (so adds 4 MPG encoder counters) :

7i96sd_mpgp1.bin

If you wanted normal high speed (MHz) encoders, 7I96S firmware can be made
that includes a number of these on the parallel expansion connector.

Another option is to add a 7I85/7I85S which support 4 encoders in single
ended or differential mode with appropriate signal conditioning. There
is standard 7i96S firmware to support these daughtercards.

(manual extract HARDWARE CONFIGURATION IP ADDRESS SELECTION The 7I97T has four options for selecting its IP address. These options are selected by Jumpers W11 and W12.
W11 W12 IP ADDRESS
DOWN DOWN FIXED 192.168.1.121(DEFAULT)
DOWN UP FIXED FROM EEPROM 
Note: The as shipped default EEPROM IP address is 10.10.10.10. This can be changed via the mesaflash utility)

I have tried multiply attempts using the following jumper pin locations
Down UP =  Computer ip 10.10.10.1 -7i97t unchanged at 10.10.10.10
Down UP =  Computer ip 10.10.10.11 -7i97t unchanged at 10.10.10.10 
Down UP =  Computer ip 10.10.10.10 -7i97t unchanged at 10.10.10.10 

also tried 
down down= computer at 192.168.1.1  & 7i97t at 192.168.1.121
down down= computer at 192.168.1.0  & 7i97t at 192.168.1.121
down down= computer at 192.168.1.121  & 7i97t at 192.168.1.121

same results

Ive spent the last 2 days at this and im lost. 

I cannot get mesaflash to find the board name or anything.
I cannot get mesaflash to update either. my installed version is something like 3.4.8 or something like that and ive read i need 3.5.something for 7i97t. Im at home now. cant remember exactly. anyway ran all the bash command listed on github for mesaflash update and it says im uptodate with 3.4.8 which i dont think is correct. 

Is there a way to verify correct connection between the computer and the mesa board without using Mesaflash or ping as the bash command?ping has returned ''working fine'' on many of the attempts above but still unable to launch this basic config without errors? what leds should be lit with a correct connection.

What ip address should be in the Hal file? the boards or the computers?

I have run into a need for LinuxCNC. I'm wondering if some kernel / device driver work is needed for supporting LinuxCNC on Pi 5. I would look for a user to be able to download, install and use the software without high-level technical support.

Please let me know your thoughts.

If Input common 0 (TB1 pin 1) is connected to +5V
You cannot use any signal other than 5V on inputs 0..11
 (so if you have +36 V signals, the common must be GND)

Apparently you missed a step, you still have it set to automatic.

Set the IP address in the hal file to 10.10.10.10
(and make sure the 7I96S is set for 10.10.10.10)

So I  wonder why it is working now?

I have inputs 0-15 available on the 7c80 (have TB02.0 connected to GND)

Looks like Black, Black/white, Black/Orange can all be tied together and connected to GND
Black/Green and Red tied together and connected to 5v+ (power and LED+)
Yellow to an input pin (X)
Yellow/Black to an input pin (Y)
Brown to an input pin (Z)
Black/Brown to an input pin (4th)
Grey to an input pin (spd X1)
Black/Grey to an input pin (spd X10)
Orange to an input pin (spd X100)

I'm not sure on how to wire the A+,B+ and A-,B- for the dial

Looking at this post, would it make sense to use the Encoder (TB4) header for A/B?

Not sure on how i should wire the E-Stop, should E-Stop be controlling a relay for the psu/vfd input power (220v in this case)?

New installation of Linux2.9.3 on a Lenovo Yoga

I followed the tommylight Ethernet setup for 7i9x and can't seem to get Linux to recognize the 7i96s

Power LED and the green user LED's change status, I'm getting a swirly network icon up in the top right that I assume is indicating it's trying to connect.

Settings and error are as shown in attached.

I also tried moving the jumpers from the default 192.168.1.121 to EEPROM and same result except can't connect to 10.10.10.11

Suggestions?

You have set the host PC's IP address to the Mesa cards address.
This will not work, all IP addresses on a network must be different.

I would suggest setting the host IP address to 10.10.10.100
(and the 7I97 to 10.10.10.10)

Well, naturally, that looks normal  (no exponential/varying thread pitch)

Im new to linux cnc and linux in general. coding and programming is not my strengths so im looking for some help with my retrofit.
I have a maho mh800w which has a philips 523 controller. This has died multiple times and i have been lucky enough to repair it until now as the cpu board or graphics board has gone.
Time for a retrofit as im sick of drip feeding programs.
RotarySMP has been kind enough to forward on all his information which has been great to cross reference philips 432/532 wiring diagrams.

Warning i will probably be asking simple questions but i dont know what i dont know.

1st problem
I cant get a basic configuration to open. this is a basic config that tommy light shared in some thread.
Ive tried 10.10.10.10 and 192.168.1.121 with 7i97t and im lost.
