Verify my Mesa selection

Category: Driver Boards

Hello,

I am in the process of ordering the necessary components to retrofit my CNC mill. I just worked my way through the mesa selection guide and worked with the configuration tool. Now I would like your help verifying my selection so that as a beginner I don't make a costly mistake that could have been avoided.
The requirements are as follows:
3 analog servo drives with feedback from glass scales
1 Spindle vfd
3 mpg handwheels
34 digital inputs
18 digital outputs

At some point I would like to add physical buttons to the operators console, which would be realised with an 7i73 in the console.

The PC is in the operators console as well, and can only be connected to the mesa cards via ethernet.

In another post tommylight suggested I use the 7i97t, which can support my servomotors and the mpgs as well as a few inputs. Ideally i would expand this with a 7i76, however that is not available for me in europe.

Following the guide I came up with a different setup. As FPGA card I could use 7i96s and then connect 7i77 with the 25 pin connector. That leaves the smart serial connection for later use with the 7i73.
7i96s: Main FPGA board, controls spindle, 3 MPGs(6 inputs), 5 inputs, 6 outputs
7i77: controls the servo motors, takes the feedback from linear scales, 32 inputs, 16 outputs
7i73: keys and encoders on the operator control

so that should have me covered, or am I missing something?

Mesa CT Huge Improvements Coming

I just installed mesact_2.1.5_amd64.deb over 2.1.4 but running it still shows 2.1.4-Build Date 7/16/2024 in the title bar. Any ideas? Synaptics package manager shows that v2.1.5 is installed.

Thanks

You can determine module versions with mesaflash's --readhmid option

7I97T PWMGen Dither and Firmware Version

Category: Driver Boards

LinuxCNC Version 2.9.2
Mesa 7I97T + 7I76 Firmware 7I97t_7;i76d
Mesaflash 3.5.9

When attempting to enable PWM Dithering I'm getting the resulting error:

./main.hal:63: parameter or pin 'hm2_7i97.0.pwmgen.00.dither' not found

I see in the HOSTMOT2 manual that "PWMGen firmware version 1 or greater" is required for dither.  Is this the problem?  How can I determine which version of the PWMGen firmware my card has on it?  Is this the likely issue?

Thanks,

Skylor

Help installing samba on Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Nooo, that page says its part of Debian so nothing to do in the apt foders
Can you try
sudo apt update
sudo apt install samba

Yeah thats how I usually install it except when using the Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO found on the site here on the linuxcnc.org/downloads/ page it doesnt work and gives me the error: E: Package 'samba' has no installation candidate.

It installs just finew when using the ISO from the Debian site but when using the Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO from Linuxcnc.org its a no go :(

Yes, bit that was constrained to a certain type of device (VFD for centrifuges for U238 to U235 enrichment), this is not.
On the other side, anything is vulnerable, it just takes a bit of time, and knowledge shortens that time a lot.

Ok, I did figure out that I can't test the plotter with a sim running. Everything works as it should when I run from installed.

I still would like to look at your code if possible.

I can neither deny or confirm it was any sort of test.
All I can confirm at it’s highest point the roof was sloped.

Potential All-in-One Single Board Computers

The uart will more than likely be a USB uart, so not suitable for RT, in actual fact there doesn’t appear to be a real time driver for “real” aka hardware serial ports for linuxcnc.
I’m starting to think a lot of these SBC s are more of a gimmick than anything else.
Tho in saying that I have been running an Odroid H3+ for several years now. The dual NICs and nvme port were big sellers for me and the fact the RAM isn’t hardwired to the board.
Honestly if the Beagle Bone Black was upgraded with more RAM and a quicker CPU and still kept the PRUs that would be an awesome and really capable “all in one solution”.
For small form factor X86 solutions the HP T640 has a quad core cpu, and some of the HP & Lenovo minis are worth a look at as well.
