Linuxcnc on my machine?

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

The new LCNC install ISO was just released. Using this is usually the easiest way to test the PC in question.

linuxcnc.org/downloads/

DD the iso to a flash drive and boot from it. Run the latency test.

Linuxcnc on my machine?

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Hello.
I am running or trying to run an Avid cnc router and plasma combo with rotary.
After 3 years of messing with this and replacing 3 pc's and multiple install I can confidently say that Mach4 is garbage. Machine is solid.
I am looking into replacing the electronics for either Uccnc or Linuxcnc. In the future build a plasma only table running either Linuxcnc or Myplasm cnc because from what I see both of these have a better way to recover a failed cut than Uccnc and Mach4.

Now I have 3 available pc's i5 4th gen 8gb hdd, i7 4th gen 20gb hdd and i5 11th gen 16gb ssd. are all these 3 a good choice for Linuxcnc?

Is Debian 12 good for Linuxcnc? I am a total noob on Linux ...I am using right now an old toshiba laptop that could not run windows and running Linuxmint smoothly but more than a month struggling to boot up from hd :/ still booting from usb.

I was advised on a Mesa 7196s+THCAD2  but I need to drive 6 motors...1 for the rotary...I was so fed up with Mach4 that I did not even bothered to use the rotary.
What to do in this case?
going from Mesa to the motor drivers do I need a breakoutboard?
Which values would I need from Mach4 to use in Linuxcnc?
Is Linuxcnc is good with probing?

My plan is to install Debian on one of my old desktop and install Linuxcnc uspace to test the simulation.
One thing I do not understand about Linux terminal....If I install from the terminal which version does it install?

Let me know If I am in the right direction here....I am trying to make parts not trying to make the machine run.

Thank you!

Touch Monitor Size - Any Consensus?

Category: Computers and Hardware

rodw post=304984 userid=20660the new GUI's you are considering are more touch friendly than Gmocappy which has a lot of tabs you need to open all the time . eg jogging.
QT dragon has a lot flatter UI but still has plenty of tabs but the jogging controls are always exposed.

Not quite sure I follow that one, Gmoccapy only hides the jog controls while you are doing something you have no reason to be jogging while doing. It's a pretty smart use of screen space. I've used it for years and never thought "I wish I could touch the jog controls while doing xyz"

How big the touchscreen is depends on how much of the controls you actually want on the screen vs real buttons. Touchscreens are almost a necessity IMO but they really get overused, there are plenty of things that are not great to do on a touchscreen. I haven't used QtDragon or Probe Basic but I think a monitor above 17" or 19" is silly. I've used Gmoccapy with a 19" touchscreen pretty much exclusively with a mill and I was never really in love with touchscreen jogging, I've just been holding out on doing something different. Even with a touchscreen keyboard you still need to break out a real keyboard sometimes and while the on-screen keyboard is fine it's still annoying if you have to do something outside of LinuxCNC.

I'm actually downsizing my touchscreen to a 15.6" in favor of real buttons and a real keyboard.  I may actually try out flex ui if the plotter works as I'd rather not have all the extra touchscreen stuff. Still waiting for some things to fall into place, but this is what I'm going to from just a 19" touchscreen:

Clearing error messages - without a bunch of mouse clicks

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

In axis:    Ctrl + spacebar  clears all the messages. This can also be used for OK in a tkinter message box or confirm toolchange window.

Clearing error messages - without a bunch of mouse clicks

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I used the axisui.notifications-clear-error bit pin with oneshot. They must be loaded in a postgui file, with this option the error message appears on the screen for the time determined by oneshot and then it is deleted

Axis GUI should have hal pins to clear messages:
Type Dir Name
bit IN axisui.notifications-clear
bit IN axisui.notifications-clear-error
bit IN axisui.notifications-clear-info

See section 13:
linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gui/axis.html#_keyboard_controls

Clearing error messages - without a bunch of mouse clicks

Is there a hot key, or some way to clear error messages (preferably all of them at once)?

I find hunting a pecking to clear these error messages a PITA.

I don't mind using a dedicated input from a button on the Mesa card if that's what it takes.

Has Anyone used DeskProto

Category: CAD CAM

So for the most part I use Autodesk fusion 360 and it works fine until you go to use the multi axis option
in the Manufacturing section to find it's kept behind a pay wall. $85 per month or $680 per year and that's
on top of the regular subscription price. It's Just another reason why subscription based CAM is a losing
proposition for anyone not using it on a commercial basses. I would be using it for
generating G code for my CNC foam lathe project and need to be able to sync. the spindle to the "bit"
( actually a soldering iron ). One of the alternative software's I have come across is DeskProto. It looks
like it is a buy a license type of program not a subscription service. see link, and the bottom of it's page
www.deskproto.com/products/comptable.php
The big question is has anyone else used this software and if so how do they like it ? Would they
recommend it? Lets face it FreeCAD doesn't have 4 to 5 axis capability. At least not yet.

Brauche bitte Hilfe bei der Steuerung des Werkzeugrevolvers

Category: Deutsch

OK then, that machine can not work, the motion of the X axis must be always in relation to the center of the part, here it is at what looks like 40-45 degrees.

Hm, not sure what I'm missing here but slant bed lathes have been around for a long time. All that is required is:

- Z-axis must be parallel to the spindle axis
- X-axis must be perpendicular to the spindle axis
- cutting edge of the tool must move on a line that passes through the center of the spindle

The first two requirements are clearly fulfilled and I would certainly hope that the builder of the machine has made sure that the tool pointing 45° down will be the correct height to fulfill the third as well.
