Magic. Truthfully I still don't understand how you don't need a RS-232 to RS-485 converter either. But, I'm OK chalking it up to Magic.
I thought Stefan was still using the RS485 converter that came with is USB interface.
No I am using the connector from the converter but not the converter. Still cant figure out how it is working. Its just a straight through connector.

Which part was the most helpful? I just want to refine the document a bit more.

The more I thought about it the more I liked the Hypertherm mapping diagram so I modified the reference document to show it. I think it looks better - please find attached.
that Hypertherm diagram clearly seems to show the right hand side is an ordinary 9 pin serial port. The Hypertherm has more pins than most RS485 devices require. RS485 is a protocol not a wiring standard. So maybe an adapter is not required.

The part that showed from the Hypertherm to the BOB, since they are named different things on the hypertherm diagram, it helped me get to the correct wiring much faster.

When you say "adapter" do you mean the break out board, or the RS-232 to RS-485 converter? Because I tried it without the converter in every wire combination humanly possible... it wont work.
The RS-485 for hypertherm uses 4 wires because it is in Full-Duplex. Half Duplex RS-485 only requires 2 wires. So the wiring can change with the protocol's use a bit.
