well that didn't take long . So Headache 1 the 7i71 starts up just fine with the PnP 6i25 and 7i76 over SSerial ( Blinking Green led ).
Unfortunately when I tried it on the 7i76e board at home all I got was a red led and a sneaky suspicion that the 2 boards
aren't talking to each other. The reason I say that is when I checked the debug report it says the pin I am using to turn on
a flood cooling relay ( connected to the 7i71 ) is missing . Sorry I don't have the debug report to post. I will be plugging it in
to the PnP controller when I get to work in the morning to make sure I didn't somehow damage the 7i71 board. ( unlikely )

Check both configs, the hal file has a
loadrt hm2_xxx followed by something like 0000xxxx
this is what i use for Mesa 7i92 with 7i77 and 7i74 attached to 7i70 and 7i71
loadrt hm2_eth board_ip="10.10.10.10" config=" num_encoders=6 num_pwmgens=0 num_stepgens=0 sserial_port_0=00000000 sserial_port_0=00010000 sserial_port_1=00200000"
notice the serial port stuff and the changing numbers, although not sure exactly what does what, it was quite a while back when i dealt with that.

it no longer gives me the happy blinking green light when I launch any of the PnP's linuxcnc profile's. . I hope I didn't somehow corrupt
the 7i71's PIC.

tommylight is there a simple way to ping the 7i71 to tell if it's even being seen by the 7i76 or the 7i76e?

Not that i know off, but pretty sure PCW would have something to say about it.
Still, as far as i know the SSERIAL is either working or it is not, when not usually a cable issue or hal loadrt line.
Also there should be an LED to show a valid connection, there is the "show hal configuration" to check if the card is there and see the pins and their name/numbering, and after all that is OK there are LED's for every output pin on the Mesa 7i71 near the output terminals.
Might want to post this also on the "driver boards" section of the forum as that is where PCW is at.

is smart serial enabled in your hal file on the line for hostmot2?
Are you using the same known good cable?
Is the cable a 568-A or 568-B version?. The manual will only give a pinout for one of these. If you have the wrong kind, you need to work out hte changed pinout.

1. Do you have field power to the 7I71? (you should get a red fault light if powered)
2. How is the serial cable 7I71 connected to your system?
3. What is the hm2_pci or hm2_eth driver command line?
