I wonder if the PC is going in to some sort of sleep mode. Possibly turning off accessory power.
You can re-start the Mesa cards by toggling hm2_5i25.0.sserial-run off then on again. if avoiding a reboot is desirable.

Thought I should post some pictures of the finished product. Well almost finished I still have to make a mounting bracket for the monitor. Pictures are inside and outside of the box.

Andy
Its quite possible that is what's happening. I disabled the screensaver and the length of time over which the error happened was different by more then an hour.
Is there something in the bios that might control that type of sleep mode?
Thanks

I just went out to the shop to check on the machine and it had fallen into a state I thought I had fixed??
When left inactive for 30 min plus the display screen will segment the video overlapping 4 copies of the display. The only way I have found to recover is to press alt-f4 and select log-out from the window that appears (all 4 of them). Then when I logged back in I checked and the screensaver was still set 'screensaver disabled'. This had not happened all day yesterday when I disabled the screensaver and I also selected a different screensaver in case it come back on. But the computer was turned off and rebooted this morning. I don't believe the 4 screens that appear are any kind of screensaver.
There are a number of thinks that were not present in the installation of linuxcnc on the old Dell computer I used for the last 2 years. This maybe how debian is reacting with the new motherboard?
thanks
Jim

Try this at the terminal prompt
xset s off -dpms
That should stop screen-blanking (dpms is separate from screensaver)

Went back to the shop and linuxcnc again reports loss of communication. It had been setting idle for the last hour without the screensaver or any keyboard or mouse input.

The W5 on 7i77 is to the right when compared to the 7i77man.pdf and the W2 on 5i25 is down.

If i remember correctly i have written somewhere on this thread or another similar one to not power the Mesa board with a single power source, that will always cause problems since the board outputs and inputs do create and receive a lot of interference.
I always use a UBS cable with the small connector cut and wired to only power the mesa cards from the computer. Never have any problems with them.
