What do you really get for a $350 desk top engraver ?

Category: Show Your Stuff

this is just a very crude picture of the belt route and gears for a linear reduction for open ended belts. the 72 tooth pulley's would just be a toothed idler pulley for the reduction and the idlers are for the omega configuration to route the belt out of the serpentine. the motor for the drive would just be mounted on the back side of a plate that holds everything in place.

I have a short video about Inkscape for plasma, bot sure if it is on toma.cnc1 or toma berisha channel, i have 4 channels on youtube.
Make the table at least 5-10cm bigger on all sides, less splash when cutting at the edges.
2mm is enough for table and slats, i used 3mm it proved to much and quite un-necessary.

Hi Andy I was just wondering 8 years later how your converted Emcomat 20E is running? Are there any recommendations you can offer in hindsight that might improve the retrofit? Kind regards, Adam

Sorry, was sleeping! :)
ls <<< list in linux, so
lsusb <<< will list usb devices
ls <<< lists files in current folder
lsblk <<< lists block devices like HDD and USB flash
lscpu <<< lists processors
lspci <<< lists PCI device's
Etc
-
Although with Debian, i would just reinstall, it still has some strange failures at random, like disapearing panels...

I first did static im autotune and that worked.
So i did the rotary im and it faulted as oL3 derating error:

So i changed the carrier freq from 8 to the lowest setting 2. The autotuning took a bit longer but errored out on the same.

the belts i am using don't have much backlash if any. Planetary gear boxes have some backlash to them and they require some space. i agree you can get some cheap gear boxes out of China even a small harmonic is not too bad in price but require the extra space. if you were needing loads of torque a harmonic drive would be the way to go but i noticed the life on the cheap ones is only 6000 or 7000 hours.

Belts are dirt cheap :) i would have to price around but you can even get pulley stock with the teeth cut if you don't want to get into doing that part and want to do some custom pulley ideas.

Yes, usually for lower voltage you need a more powerful driver.  But it should still work but you won't be able to use it at full power.  Did you follow these settings?

Ethercat build from source - full instructions

Category: EtherCAT

@tommy (or another mod) could you sticky this thread please? It's a gold mine of info!
Done.

I am not sure this needs to be stickied anymore as ther has been so much work by Scott Laird on the ethercat hal driver which also includes a buildbot that pushes the deb file across to the etherlabmaster guys who have agreeed to host it for us.
Today, you just need to:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install  linuxcnc-ethercat

Then follow the sticky in this forum section
forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat/45336-etherc...-how-to-step-by-step

Some people have got tangled up by following this method and then trying to install from repositories.

My feeling is it should be unstickied but what do others think?

Installing ethercat repositories

Category: EtherCAT

Sometimes you need to install the ethercat repositories and don't have the linuxcnc  ISO handy or:
1. ethercat's security key has expired and needs updating
2. You are not running Debian Bookworm installed by  Linuxcnc's ISO on the downloads page.
3. You are running linuxcnc on  hardware that is not directly supported by our ISO

Please proceed as follows.
1.  download the attached script.
2. rename it to be ecat.sh (eg remove .txt)
3. Navigate to the download folder in a terminal console
4. type: sudo ./ecat.sh

Follow the steps outlined in this sticky
forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat/45336-etherc...-how-to-step-by-step

The script will delete the ethercat apt sources file if it exists (and has the same name as used in our ISO.)
Mods might like to sticky this as some people have needed this recently (Due to point 1)

I'm kinda thinking this vfd is just too underrrated for this setup.
Considering the output voltage is max 200V and my vfd is limited to ~11A , it could handle the ~2.2kw max of the motor. but probably has too little juice for low rpm's.

As when it is trying to ramp up the current on the display is like 17.5A which my vfd can do in short burst but not long.

That would leave the following options:
- Fit it with a 7.5 -10kw vfd
- Re-fit the OEM 380 - 200V trafo and get a 3X230v ~4kw vfd
- Replace the motor with a china 380V equivalent

I'm thinking about the last option as that makes life easier. The cost of all of these options are pretty much the same.

i have seen some rotation reductions with ring gears and arc tooth belts that looked interesting. i was looking at size requirements and it is pretty compact and low profile but it's only around a 6 to 1 reduction.

You could consider planetary gearboxes. These are not expensive out of China,
We wanted to use a 5:1 gearbox on a retrofit recently but we had to keep the original mounting geometry to a NEMA23 motor.
WUMA gears did a custom version with an 8mm dia shaft (usually 14mm) and a custoom shaft length. They charged an extra $10 for that but the total was still only USD $77 per gearbox. We bought 3,

The problem i see is on the programming side with CAM is the software being so expensive beyond the 3-axis hobby use Cam i use at home.

The commercial 5 axis CAM on average is probably somewhere in the ballpark of 10K per year which is out of reach for most on a hobby level.
