Andy just pointed me to thread that can possibly fix Debian 7 update issues.

forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configura...ring-whb04b-4#131331

And yes you can either use the Debian 9 LiveDVD to install LinuxCNC 2.7 or follow the instructions in my previous link to install the real time kernel, LinuxCNC version of your choice and how to setup for using an Ethernet Mesa card.

I just pushed a couple of bug fixes to the 7i96 repo to fix flashing the card from the configuration tool.

Just in case you weren't aware you can get debian stretch with rtpreempt precompiled in a live cd/usb here

Thanks. It'll be the plan B in case the compiling process fail... compiling the kernel takes forever...

The install and usage instructions are in the documents
jethornton.github.io/7i96/install.html

It looks like you downloaded a zip, no idea where that might get installed. But if that way works you open a terminal and type in 7i96.

John, thanks ! those instruction were so much better, worked like a charm.

Earlier I followed a readme file on github, might have been an old repository or something. :(

FWIW I still could not launch from my home directory. I had to enable "show hidden files and folders" hunt down the install directory and setup a desktop link to the 7i96 file.

Other than that I'm good to go, thanks again!
