Anyone have any ideas why Linux cnc won't stay up after running through the pncconfig wizard?.

If linuxcnc wont start with a particular hal/ini file set,
you have to look at the error messages to determine
the cause.

Usually the hal line number and offending
statement are printed

When I start Linux cnc and select the file I would like to use the config file I made is there. When I go and select it the ok button doors not light up. I don't get far enough to get an error message

One possibility worth checking...

Does the screen look something like this?

If so, you need to expand the "my-mill" or whatever folder to choose the config.

Ok my Mistake again. Opened it up and got it to start sort of. A bunch of errors but have not replaced the 264v field power. I just got a new transformer for it and a few diodes to create an ac to dc bridge rectifier. I hope it works this time.

One more question for the experts. Do the servos and motors have to be powered up on start up our can I start them after Linux is started

Rather than hope I really would suggest just buying an actual DC power supply. Something like: www.ebay.com/itm/New-24V-DC-6A-145W-Regu...&hash=item1e5feda61f

It is usual to have LinuxCNC turn on the servos and drives. Typically a field output would drive the main contactor. (an intermediate relay might be needed)

Absolutely, unless you know what you are doing I would not build a power supply

Also whats wrong with using the existing 24V from the brother machine?

One very basic note if you make your own PS from a transformer, you want about a
18VAC transformer (24VAC is way too high ) And you need a filter capacitor

Ok got 24v dc for testing and initial start up. I will get the 24v from the machine when everything is ironed out. After the last little bang I want to make sure that it doesn't blow anything in the machine its self. (very expansive parts)

so I started linux with field power on, machine off and got the following error message

Any thoughts ideas or advice helpful

I am hesitant to start the machine itself in case of a run away servo motor at this time. They have not been tuned yet.

You have too high of a field voltage ( greater than 32V)

This is likely to damage the 7I77 card or things you connect to it
