Hi folks,
I´ve got a small machine shop and one of my workhorses is a sweet Maho MH600E from 1989. It´s one year younger than me.
The machine has been working for me for 3 years with almost no problems. Once the pulley for the vertical axis has been lose and lately the glas scale for x axis broke.
Since last year i´m planning to do a retrofit because the machine is old and the problems will occour more often. Due the lack of schematics and support you can´t even fix the most problems or tell where they come from.
You can´t buy cheap spareparts because they won´t work with the old unit.

So yesterday i´ve got a new error message from the Maho and because i´ve ordered the mesa card and an bare computer setup, I´ll start with the retrofit.

What i´ve bought so far:
Mesa 5i25 (6i25 would be much better, because you have alot of trouble buying a rather new mainboard with and old PCI slot. Almost all new mtherboars only have PCIe.) So i´ve bought from ebay and PCIe to PCI adapter. Seems to work
Mesa 7i77 - analog servos supported. so i can use the hardware that´s already in the machine.

PC setup:
GIGABYTE A320M-S2H CPU AMD Athlon 3000G 3,5GHz
SSD Festplatte WD Blue 2.5 Zoll 6.3cm 250 500 1TB SATAIII 3D NAND 7mm
PC Netzteil ATX Be Quiet SILENT System Power 9 CM 400W 80 PLUS Bronze
+ some cables and an old display

first start up the latency test was above 1.000.000ns
After turning off some bios automatic shit it went down to 21000-25000ns on the base thread.

I think i can work with that. The machine runs with G0 at 3m/minute. And i don´t need to be faster than that. I´m milling only steel.

That´s it so far.
I´ve setup the pc with Linux and run the pncconfig wizard thingy. Here are some problems because the documentation is quite thin in explaining every single option you can set. But that should be no problem, because you can change everything later on too.

Since Rotary SMP has made almost the same retrofit:

Retrofitting a 1986 Maho MH400E

I´m about to use his setup for gearchange and axis setup.

At the moment i´m checking schematics and i try to figure out how too hook everything up

Here is a topic about servo tuning, but it does have a lot of info about wiring and testing things with Mesa 7i77, might just save you a lot of headache and money.

Hi Tommy, thats a thread i need to use later. Thats definetly on my list.
To my shame i have the first questions to the 7i77 setup.
The manual stats i can deliver vin over the field io connector.
W5 is right
W1 is left
+10V on TB1 1 and 5
GND on Tb2 GND

the Leds on the right side of the board are on, but the one next to W5 not.
Is that normal or am i missing something ?

Noooooooooooooooo :)
TB1 5V only, or not at all since you have W5 right.
I really hope you have 10V on TB2, not TB1.
For W5 on the right side, you also need to set the jumper on the 5i25 to supply power to 7i77, there are two of them for two ports, so set only the one going to 7i77.

Have you tried the latency test using no bass and you don't require the base thread
Only the servo thread

Okay, iḿ with the 5v from the 5i25 and fiel power from an external powersupply.
Actually the whole setups in my livingroom table and my wife is freaking out. Normal phenomen

So my next step would be to run the pcncconfig wizard. Most of the options are easy to choose but when it comes to the configuration part of the I/Os of the card, there are some questions popping up.
I want to add some glasscales, and they need to be hooked up.

There are
I/O Connector 2 - alot of unused Inputs ?
I/O Connector 3 - this one has 0-5 Encoder inputs
SS #0 I/O
SS #1 PWM

Under I/O Connector 3 there are dropdowns where i can select "Axis Encoder".
Are those meant to be used for glasscales or encoders from the servo drives ? Or do the servo drive encoders only respond to the amplifiers ?

Neither fish nor music. I think he meant to try the latency test without the base thread. Just the servo thread.
