How to install/select QtDragon?

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

I think you have to create a sim.qtdragon directory. I tried that and copied over the .ini and .hal files from the sim.gmoccapy directory. I also copied the various sub-directories (macros, qtvcp etc.). I can at least start it in qtdragon mode now but it won't run and complains it can't find the sim.qtdragon/qtvcp/screens/qtcnc file.

I founds some comments online that QtDragon is still in the prototype phase and shouldn't be used for production. Is there any truth in this? I was led to believe it was a simple process to switch from gmoccapy to QtDragon but maybe I misunderstood.

qtdragon replaces gmoccpy.
If you are getting errors it is a good idea to share the exact error messages here so there is less guess work involved for people trying to help.
Also note the if you just want to have a look there are simulation configs for QtDragon in the configs directory which should work right out of the box.

Will do the tests later, here is what I have available:
TP x200 tablet (the one which turns the screen 180°
TP T43
TP T420s
ThinkCentre M625q

One other thought was perhaps to get one of those used Getac outdoor Notebooks (but that was mainly because of the dust and water protection features)

Hi Endian,

Yeah. I know it's a pain.
But today i started building a new linux distro. I am at 50% now.
It will take some time.

Do you need additional software on the distro?

If you want to try it on your actual CNC you first copy all config files for backup and then change one line in the INI file
[DISPLAY]
DISPLAY = qtvcp qtdragon

https://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gui/qtdragon.html#_getting_started_the_ini_file

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. It's looking for a configs/qrdragon directory.

Can you clarify something please: How does QtDragon relate to gmoccapy? It's really not clear to me if QtDragon is just a UI skin or if it replaces gmoccapy.

This might help the noobs.
This video of mine explains how to build Linuxcnc for a RIP (and Debs)

Ethercat install is here forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat/45336-etherc...-how-to-step-by-step

But once you change the name, it should not matter if a user installed by the Debs. The .so just needs to be installed in the right folder. Perhaps that can be scripted too.

It will be interesting if your planner could be copied to the EMC folder src/emc/grotius_tp and the main  make file modified to build it.  I did this once for a seperate task module and it took about 15 minutes.

Easiest way is to grotius build an .iso file for greenhorns as me... but I think the best way to do it is to learn it myself but it is pain to everybody around included me who is something starting from scratch ... there it is a lot of stuff depends at a lot of other stuff ... I am starting them on my virtual machine but when it will work I will move to real iron .... I will need a little bit of help and patience too

@Endian,

When you run the scurve in linux. The joint.[x].... hal outputs already show you position, velocity, acceleration that is
usable for your servo drive. The halscope shows a acceleration curve that is indeed not constant.

Yes it should be from there but it has that G64 P.. aproximation stuff and when I am not soo satisfied from it, it is better to use your TP with precise values of of it or?

Yet another LinuxCNC noob with a PCI card as Port1 issue.

Ok let me compare that with my machine as I am using also two parallel ports.
I will get back to you next week when I have been been at my workshop.
