EtherCAT plasma torch voltage reader

Thank you for looking at the design. Always good with new insights.
I can go with another resistor for added safety. Looked around a bit, and that will require a bit deeper study it look like. Not so easy to find in the sources I use. The most professional source I use is tme.eu. The only wire wound resistors at 100 kOhm they had would just fit in my hand.
Today, the resistor is chosen to operate with 500V, and 100kOhm is chosen for the heat output it generates.

I was thinking about the high voltage aspect when designing the board.
In this view you can see the short wire between the connector and the resistor. As I see it this will act as a fuse and blow out at high currents entering the board. Isolated area around the voltage parts. Hopefully any damage and malfunction will stay on the left side of the isolation barrier.
That's also why I am redesigning it.The intention was to have the ground planes electrically  connected to the work piece. As it is now the ground planes are connected to the electrode. That small image is from the new design, also the high voltage part of the resistor tucked away behind the connector so shouldn't be very easy to reach with fingers.

The parts cost of one mini-board is around 10 USD/EUR so replaceable. I don't want a failure on the mini-board to break the EtherCAT board though, that's a bigger deal if that happens.
Thanks again for giving my brain some exercise.

So a new design has been made - thanks to an electronics engineer who helped - with reversed polarity for the torch voltage, well, everything is internal to the board. Should be safer, better. Just ordered new circuit boards. Somewhere after March 10th they might show up.

Send controlword

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Hello again, guys,
I was wondering how to send the control word. I know about the transmission in the configuration file through cia402, but I need to send a specific value for the control word, not just set up the connection between them. Can you tell me where the signals are generated in LinuxCNC so that I can send a specific value? If I turn on the machine with a button, why doesn't the control word value change? Please explain to me not where the signals are sent, but how to send a specific value to the control word. Where in Linux are these signals generated, and how can I set them up for a specific driver? At what point do I need to inform Linux that the driver should use the control word 0Fh? I need to insert 0Fh into 6040, but it doesn't seem to work. I have the following pieces of code written:
sodick.hal:

#from cia402 to servo(ethercat)
net 4-controlword              cia402.4.controlword => lcec.0.4.cia-controlword

ethercat-conf.xml:

      <syncManager idx="2" dir="out">
        <pdo idx="1600">
          <pdoEntry idx="6040" subIdx="00" bitLen="16" halPin="cia-controlword" halType="u32"/>

I had a look at that too, but it seems to be quite limited in functions just for jogging and only one axis at a time..., my teammate is having a deeper look into it though maybe he might find something, thanks for the tip!

I recieved an offer from a company "paycnc.com", heard theyre fairly reputable when it comes to retrofitting kits
the one they've shown me is an entire GSK kit, GSK 980MDi controller, appropriate specs axes and spindle ac servo motors with drives + mpg and cables at just shy of 6000 USD.
Any ideas if this is a good route to go down?
Also the motors all have inbuilt incremental encoders, the axes are fine but im worried about the spindle orientation for ATC, cant really see any easy way to do a homing run or something to get it in position for the tools to slide in/out

EtherCAT XML Configuration help (Elmo drive)

Category: EtherCAT

I looked at the ethercat-conf.xml you attached. This can be easy.
They are cia402 drives.
Check out here for a complete, small example on how to connect cia402 drives.

Thanks a lot cmorley!!! Great Help. Definitely I must study that doc. It has part of what I am looking for.

The last 3 questions I have is: I download from the github a copy of Linuxcnc to a folder in my pc. 1) Then I saw it says in that page: "There are several builtin HAL panels available. In a terminal type qtvcp list to see a list." => If I open a terminal and type this nothing happens 2) How do I start building my Qtvcp ? and 3) How do I start my linuxcnc version instead of the preconfigured version?
I think that maybe part of what I am asking is on linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gui/qtvcp.html#sec:qtvcp-overview suggested page by Hastrh2o

Thanks a lot,

Thanks Rod I had seen your post on that subject earlier.
Now I have been banging my head on setting up NPN NC induct prox switches and one of my concerns is that maybe the parport is faulty or not configured right.
The par port tester in the wiki is broken page 404 not found for the files.
Fortunately I found Big John T's file and script here.

Hi,

I will check this afternoon. But since it's working after the second call at the same line, I doubt. I edit my first post to be more clear on the test I did.

I think we have all gone off track with how this should work.
Please refer to the template source code
github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master...s/homecomp.comp#L257
if (customH[joint_num].is_custom_homing) {
Note that there is a condition here that decides if this joint should be custom homed or homed normally.
So this pin should be set to 1 if this joint is to be custom homed with setp

But if you look at tangentaudio's code, he (and every body else, me included) uses this pin to trigger homing in cia402 which is wrong!
So we should be creating a new pin start-homing to trigger the cic402.n.home pin.

Can you guys review this and see if you agree?

Thanks for sharing your success. I am about to start again for the third time. I keep trying  to add extra stuff in. The first time, my work was obsoleted as the homecomp template was massively changed. Before I started, I did work out that the cia402.comp would never work and at that time changes to homing.c were required.
The homecomp is a very simple but we keep trying to use cia402.comp that as written before custom homing was introduced and was based on drive that homed to index.

I did try building cia402.comp into the homecomp but that was the one that was obsoleted. I don't think it would work because the homing loop sits outside the lcec loop so it will be one step behind.

I think the  best architecture would be to rewrite cia402.comp so it did everything with the drive except homing (inside the lcec loop) and then everything to do with homing was done in the homecomp.

Qtdragon for lathe??

Category: Qtvcp

Thanks.  The first issue is the output to control the spindle speed. I use a mesa 7i76e card with 0-10V as reference voltage on the spindle port TB4. The output won't go higher than +5V or for that matter, 50% of any reference voltage that I use.  The spindle also starts turning at 50% of the maximum spindle speed output setting when I use the slider in manual mode to control the spindle speed.  (The spindle only starts to run when the slider is in the middle.) The reason why I suspect that the issue is related to the qt_lathe gui is because when I do the exact same setup with pncconfig selecting AXIS as gui, the maximum output is the the same as the max+ reference voltage.

The output is similar to "bipolar mode" as descibed in the 7i76e manual p15:as in the screenshot of the manual..

I also noticed that the -5V to +5V (or 0-10V) output setting in the Spindle section of pncconfig for qtdragon has no influence on the output voltage of the spindle speed control. Whether the box is selected or not it makes no difference.

My current goal is to get the lathe running with the correct axes and spindle control.  Once that is sorted I'll inform you of the other issues as I find them.

Remark:
The issue was resolved by changing the OUTPUT_SCALE parameter in the .ini file to a value of 1000.  As I read through the comments in the forum regarding the OUTPUT_SCALE value I realised that this is not an absolute value.

Maybe you can check the pinout here attached.

I will do some further tests now- coming from 2.8... and a 7i77, this stuff is quite "all new" now with ct ect. :D

Thanks guys!

Embed a Qtvcp camera panel (there is a sim example of this)

linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/gui/qtvcp-v...vcp:panels:cam-align
You can modify the panel to add buttons or add a pyvcp panel as well for native buttons
